History of Typhoon Hawke

The Hawker Typhoon (affectionately known as "Tiffie") was originally intended as a dedicated interceptor, intended to succeed the Hawker Hurricane in the 1930s, and was first developed in 1937. The system was developed in accordance with British Department of Aviation specifications (Specification F.18/37), requiring the aircraft to receive a new range of 2,000 hp Rolls-Royce and Napier engines. The Typhoon aims to do just that, thanks to the promising Napier 24-cylinder liquid-cooled Sabre engine selected for the airframe, producing over 2,000 hp.

On paper at least, the Typhoon might even rival the legendary Supermarine Spitfire and its legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, but history will prove otherwise and set the Typhoon down a very different path.

Development

Despite the promise of the all-new aircraft, initial development revealed several key issues with the design, notably the fuselage structure and the new Sabre engine. The first flight took place in February 1940. On May 9, 1940, a prototype Typhoon suffered a devastating fuselage failure at the bottom of the tail at the rear of the cockpit, while the Sabre engine suffered a number of initial problems. The situation became so complicated that the future of the Typhoon was in jeopardy, and the Air Force wanted to cancel the program entirely in favor of buying the American-made Republic P-47 Thunderbolt.

It wasn't until the arrival of the Focke-Wulf 190 "Wurger" series of fighters in September 1941 that helped advance the Typhoon project, making it a viable competitor to the elusively powerful German fighter.

Design

Visually, the typhoon takes on a menacing stance. The massively mounted chin cooler below the fuselage is the most noticeable physical identifier. The blades are located just below and behind the propeller spinner and are integrated into the lower part of the fuselage. The pilot's cockpit is near the center of the design, above and behind the trailing edge of the wing.

The fuselage itself is almost tubular, terminating in a conventional fin with a rounded vertical fin. The wing adopts a low single-wing cantilever design, which is circular. The landing gear is conventional, with retractable main gear and retractable tail wheels.

The structure consists mainly of metallic stress skins.

Armed

The original form of the Typhoon was armed with no less than 12 x 7.7 mm (.303 caliber) machine guns. While they sounded impressive, heavier weapons such as 12.7mm (0.50 caliber) heavy machine guns and cannons became standard on aircraft throughout the war. As such, the Typhoon's primary armament has been upgraded to a more powerful array of 4 x 20mm cannons.

Two on one wing, which features a barrel fairing extending from the leading edge of the wing. Final production of the Typhoon could, as needed, further enhance this weapon by adding high-explosive rockets or conventional bomb-throwing bombs (the latter on two underwing hardpoints).

Cockpit

The Hawker Typhoon's cockpit requires a fairly steep climb. While later versions of the plane featured a more traditional sunroof, earlier models featured automotive-style gullwing doors similar to the Bell Airacobra. These early cockpit designs were also notorious for poor visibility. While car-style doors offer a more familiar way of entering the Typhoon's cockpit, they also offer pilots an unusual way to exit in case they face the prospect of leaving the plane. Like some other WWII aircraft models, the Hawker Typhoon's cockpit was prone to maintaining high and dangerous carbon monoxide levels for the pilot, so much so that the pilot actually had to wear an oxygen mask from that moment on.

From the moment the engine is started before takeoff to the moment it is safely landed and the engine is shut down. Cockpit noise was also rated high by the former pilot.

Instrumentation is traditional for British aircraft as it has a standardized "blind-fly" layout and is considered the most convenient arrangement (the standardized cockpit is to make the transition from trainer to combat aircraft more pilot friendly , as is the layout in most cases British aircraft are relatively the same as the point where an operator can actually fly any RAF aircraft without the aid of instruments). Pilots can use traditional control columns with round spade handles.

The grip provides easy access to the 4x20mm gun's fire button and brake controls. The throttle handle is offset to the left of the cockpit for easy placement of bombs/missiles, flaps and landing gear controls.

Operational Services

After the typhoon was deployed in August 1941, results were mixed. On the one hand it became the RAF's first 400 mph fighter jet, on the other the Napier engine, despite its power, proved quite complex and required a lot of attention, while still being prone to failure on the battlefield. That's the desire to "make it happen", so much so that the engine debuts before it's supposed to be officially ready on any platform. The price paid for sheer speed is offset by the aircraft's generally poor rate of climb. Although designed as a high-altitude interceptor, the Typhoon performed quite poorly above mid-altitude and surprisingly proved its worth in mid-to-low-altitude engagements.

In this way, Typhoon is actually better than Supermarine Spitfire in this role.

As a result, Typhoon is increasingly being relegated to this role and armed with more conventional ground attack capabilities than expected. The Typhoon can attack ground targets and still provide competitive performance when entangled with German bombers and fighters at this level.

What's more, the Fw-190's low-altitude plunder of Britain's southern coast was eventually answered with the arrival of a typhoon, as fighter-bombers proved adept at attacking these small German aircraft on their own terms at optimal operating altitudes. Structural flaws in the fin design also caused delays and some unfortunate deaths, although this was temporarily remedied by later reinforcements using twenty alloy riveted "tabs" on the fin base.

By 1943, the Typhoon was armed with air-to-surface missiles and 2 x 250 lb bombs under the wings. This, combined with its low-altitude performance, makes it an excellent fighter-bomber hybrid. Typhoons played a major role in disrupting German communications, both day and night, before the Normandy landings. As the Allied bases in France increased, so did Typhoon's use in creating new fronts for advancing ground forces - Typhoon began to operate from French airfields and, more importantly, from the Netherlands, allowing them to Use purchased Aim German soil. The Typhoon played this role in ground combat until the end of the war, taking over Spitfire and Mustang escort support when needed.

Their shelling of German support forces proved crucial to the strategic progress that ultimately led to Allied victory. No German target was immune to Typhon's artillery, bombs and rockets - be it ammunition depots, vehicles, marshalling yards or the ground forces themselves. By the end of the war, approximately 3,300 Taifengs had been produced. Despite these numbers, they all but disappeared in the postwar world with the advent of the jet age. The typhoon was out of service as early as 1946.

At its peak in service, the Typhoon had a total of 26 squadrons - impressive considering the design was all but halted during development.

Conclusion

Aircraft like the Typhoon are a wartime miracle. Their original designs were often doomed from the start, only for the changing face of war to force new RPGs into the ranks. As for the Hawker Typhoon, despite the flaws and limitations of the design, it is widely regarded as a successful aircraft. The RAF has taken note of the platform's capabilities and deployed accordingly.

By the time the Germans noticed, it was too late for the Reich.
