Kratos UTAP-22 Mako Story

Kratos Unmanned Systems Division is working with the U.S. Air Force to perfect the swarm unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based on the companys BQM-167A aerial drone. The BQM-167A is described as a high-performance remotely controlled airborne target designed to mimic the fighter pilot training capabilities of modern enemy aircraft. This product is made of carbon fiber by Composite Engineering, Incorporated (since acquired by Kratos). The launch is rocket-assisted and parachute recovery, so the aircraft does not require the facility (and associated costs) of a prepared runway.

The resulting aircraft was designated UTAP-22 ("Unmanned Tactical Air Platform-22").

By design, the system is seen as a swarm drone, used on a limited basis with manned aircraft to overwhelm the target area in sheer numbers, while striking with precision-guided munitions (externally and internally held). Drones are high-speed, high-performance units that cost less per unit than manned attack platforms.

Thus, if needed, drones can be manufactured in large quantities and consumed during missions, with less risk to pilots over contested airspace.

UTAP-22 conducted a swarm demonstration over China Lake in late 2015, when a McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier jet was deployed. A wider demonstration of this swarm concept is being planned.

The UTAP-22 is equipped with an understage engine, slightly swept back main wing and traditional single tail stabilizer. The fuselage, like a rocket, borrows heavily from the original BQM-167A in shape. The war load will be 550 pounds of external and internal ammunition - up to 100 pounds under each wing and 350 pounds in the bomb bay. Listed performance figures include a top speed of 1,125 kilometers per hour, a service ceiling of 15,250 meters and a range of up to 2,600 kilometers.

The fuselage is 6.13 meters long and has a wingspan of 3.2 meters.
