History
The McDonnell F-4 Phantom II series, arguably one of the best fighter jets of the 20th century, has been produced since the end of World War II than any other Western fighter jet of the time. The Phantom II developed into an all-rounder and later entered service with the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, and U.S.
Marine Corps (and was the first U.S. aircraft to do so), as well as 11 other countries around the world. The aircraft served with the U.S. military in the Vietnam conflict and in the 1991 Gulf War.
Although it has been largely obsolete by most national air forces, some are still in service todayabout 50 years after production began.
Development
The Phantom II was originally intended as an all-weather attack platform, initially as a research project for the McDonnell Corporation. The F3H-G/H was designed to be an advanced naval fighter jet powered by two Wright J65 turbojets, equipped with a set of 4 x 20mm cannons and a single seat. At the time, the U.S. Navy was looking to replace its core F3H Demon line with a more practical, more powerful model, and became aware of MacDonald's attempts. The program began in 1954, with the U.S.
Navy ordering the F3H as two evaluation YAH-1 (AH-1) prototypes, although these were equipped with new GE J79 afterburning turbojets (x2). In 1955, the U.S. Navy transformed the requirements for the AH-1 into a new two-seat all-missile fighter design, and thus the name F4H Phantom II was born. Two XF4H-1 Phantom II prototypes were built, the first flying for the first time on May 27, 1958, quickly outpacing all other aircraft in the sky.
These prototypes feature an early form of GE's legendary J79 afterburner turbojet. A total of 45 prototypes of the F4H-1 (later renamed the F-4A) were produced with General Electric J79-GE-2/2A turbojets.
This batch is generally considered a pre-production version of the US Navy's main series aircraft and resulted in the first real production example in the F-4B model series, which basically represented the second half of the original F4H - 1 production batch Second-rate. Full production started in 1957.
The F-4B "Fleet Defense" model is equipped with the J79-GE-8 series engine, which is an improved version of the A-model powerplant. The first operational squadron of F-4 operators became the U.S.
Navy's VF-114, which received a model line of F-4Bs in October 1961 after successful testing on the deck of an aircraft carrier the previous year. The U.S. Marine Corps quickly followed, recognizing the aircraft's multi-role capabilities, and in 1962 received a contract to use the platform as its primary close air support fighter-bomber.
The F-4A and F-4B models quickly landed in the aviation record books. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the two variants were measured in terms of maximum altitude (98,556 feet on December 6, 1959), time to altitude, and overall speed (1,606 miles per hour on November 22, 1961) Created a number of records.
By 1983, the US Navy had replaced all aging Phantom IIs with new swing-wing Grumman F-14 Tomcats and by 1986 with McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornets. The U.S. Marine Corps received the F-4 replacement for the F/A-18 Hornet months before the U.S. Navy. The USAF continues to field some F-4s as target drones, as QF-4s, 50 of which are in service at the time of writing.
The use of these drones is expected to continue until at least 2013.
Conclusion
What makes the top 5 legendary fighters? In the author's opinion, it is the production quantity, combat history, and multi-purpose. The Phantom II series replaces all these characteristics to become such an aircraft. Considering it was made during a relatively peaceful time, with over 5,000 examples, it's quite remarkable - numbers like these were often reached during World War II - a period of total global war. The Phantom II followed this achievement with an excellent combat record, especially during the Vietnam conflict, where it rivaled various MiG fighters.
During the Vietnam War and the 1991 Gulf War, the crew of the Phantom II destroyed 280 enemy aircraft. Needless to say, the Phantom's versatile use is well deserved. The airframe proved capable of nearly any type of role envisioned by war plannersfrom radar suppression and interception of enemy aircraft to assault and reconnaissance. The Phantom II was also proven capable of fighting on land and sea.
To that end, we've added the skills of pilots, system operators and ground crew because without them the Phantom II would never have been made by history. With all this, it's no wonder that the Phantom II became one of the most respected and recognizable aircraft of its time - some examples are still in service today.
June 2013: The Luftwaffe retired its last Phantom II on June 29, 2013, marking the end of its 40-year commitment to European power. The first Phantom II arrived on German soil in 1973, and for more than 10 years should not have been able to meet their demands.
July 2016: Turkey pinned its strike fighter hopes on the Lockheed F-35 Lighting II family of aircraft to replace its aging McDonnell F-4 Phantom II fleet in the same role. The F-35A will operate with the results of the currently ongoing next-generation indigenous TFX fighter program.
