The Mikoyan Skat Story

The Mikoyan Skat is a developing armed unmanned aerial vehicle (UCAV) that originated from the reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) of the Russian Ministry of Defense. The product was first introduced at MAKS 2007 and has continued to evolve since then to meet the larger and growing needs of the Russian Air Force - especially to keep up with developments in the West and China.

Externally, the Skat is said to be equipped with internally fixed precision-guided munitions, a tailless design, and airspace-penetrating stealth.

The original unarmed Skat was ordered as an armed version in 2013.

The Skat UCAV is said to be powered by an RD-5000B series turbofan engine with a mass of about 11,200 lbs of thrust in the center of the fuselage (this engine is similar to the one used in the Mikoyan MiG-29 "Fulcrum" - used in the fighter series) ..Avionics, fuel, and other flight-critical components are also located in this section. The vehicle's profile will be tailless, meaning no vertical tail surfaces will be used. The floor plan is reminiscent of the US Air Force's Northrop Grid Luhmann B-2 Spirit stealth bomber with a serrated trailing edge and an arrow-shaped leading edge. Since the aircraft is on three wheels (two main legs and one front leg), the landing gear will retract accordingly.

Ammunition is effective Loads are mounted in two separate bays offset from the centerline. Engines are introduced through split air intakes at the front of the aircraft. All physical features of the aircraft are located above the wings to achieve the flattest, downward facing shape possible.

Current performance features include a top speed of 500 mph, a top speed of 40,000 feet per hour, and a total range of 2,500 miles.
