The Nakajima Ki-49 Donryu (meaning "Dragon of the Storm", Allied codename "Helen") heavy bomber was designed to replace the advanced Mitsubishi Ki-21 family of medium bombers. In fact, the newer Ki-49 design was a bit of a letdown to the Air Force of the Imperial Japanese Army, as the type was slow and, like most Japanese fighters, weak and under-equipped.

As a result, the type was produced in very limited numbers (limited to just over 800), a few variants emerged and were soon seen as a partner to the successful ki-21 rather than a direct replacement for it.

The Nakajima Ki-49 was developed in 1938 and was a very useful heavy bomber design. In this context, the term "heavy bomber" is used fairly loosely, as production Ki-49s can barely carry more than 2,000 pounds of internal ammunition.

The aircraft's design followed the same lines of early Japanese artillery attempts at twin-engine bombers, with a sleek fuselage with clean lines, a mid-mounted monoplane wing layout, various embellished gun emplacements, and a single vertical tail. There are seven (or in some cases eight) people in the crew quarters.

Defensive armament (which had been an issue with Japanese bomber design throughout the war) consisted of 7.7mm machine guns in the nose, 7.7mm machine guns in the tail gun position, 2 x 7.7mm machine guns in the beam position (each side), and one 7.7mm machine gun in the belly side, a 20mm machine gun is located on the flexible dorsal side.

The first Ki-49 prototypes entered service in 1939, powered by Nakajima Ha-5 KAI radial engines with 950 hp each. Pre-production and first production models will feature 2 Nakajima Ha-41 radial engines with 1,250 hp each for increased performance. The Ki-49 entered service in 1941 with mixed results, forcing the aircraft to receive some much-needed upgrades to armor and weapons by 1942.

The "upgraded" Ki-49 came as the Ki-49-IIa, followed by another upgraded Ki-49-IIb variant.

The Ki-49 is widely used against China, Australia and Burma, but the aircraft generally outperforms the latest generation of American and British fighters. As a result, the Ki-49 suffered heavy losses throughout the conflict, and its range was reduced by 1944.

Thereafter, the Ki-49, like most medium Japanese aircraft of limited potential, focused on kamikaze attacks on Allied interests.
