History
With the P.1HH "Hammerhead" unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) scheduled to start delivering to customers in the United Arab Emirates in mid-2018, Italy's Piaggio, with the support of the United Arab Emirates, began its pursuit of the "P. 2HH" The future of a more evolved successor. The original P. 1HH was based on a heavily modified form of the company's P. 180 "Avanti" (details elsewhere on this site), a propeller-driven VIP pusher tugboat, while the P. 2HH incorporated another P. Introduced in the changes should include 180 derivatives - Multi-Purpose Patrol Aircraft (MPA).
The company has local support in Italy from the Italian Air Force, which has been interested in advanced types of drones such as the Hammerhead.
The P.2HH will bring higher performance through key design changes, namely a larger fuselage structure for increased internal volume and a new, wider composite wing for extended service life. All of this allows for larger fuel and equipment loads (up to 1,500 lbs) and longer dwell/mission times (30 hours is the stated goal). Use the same thruster propeller drive, canard configuration (albeit with an all-new canard design) and tricycle landing gear. Other takeover features of the P. 1HH include a "T-type" multi-hop tail unit. The dual-propeller (multi-blade) engine arrangement has been shown to perform better than competing designs.
Winglets added to the main aircraft improve fuel efficiency.
Since the P.180 Avanti is already a European airspace certification platform, any future attempts by Piaggio to develop drones based on this design have an advantage over foreign competitors by default. Multifunctional P. The 2HH will be able to cover a variety of roles in civilian airspace, including border protection, humanitarian air, disaster relief, general surveillance, and more, while also being well suited to serve at the military level.
Italy and Emirates Air Services are planning an initial fleet of around 10 P.2HH aircraft, each of which provides a perfect starting point for the program to secure more potential overseas orders in the future . According to the given schedule, the delivery of the new system is scheduled for early 2020.
The performance figures below are the authors' estimates based on the existing P.1HH design.
