History of Prox Dynamics Black Hornet Nano
The future of unmanned aerial vehicles will go beyond the large rocket launch platforms often presented in the media. The Black Hornet Nano, currently in service with the British Armed Forces, represents a different direction for drone service - small, very compact, low-profile drones for simple reconnaissance jobs whose dimensions make them almost imperceptible to enemy combatants.
Black Hornet Nano was developed by Proz Dynamics AS in Norway and produced by Marlborough Communications Ltd. accepted. The British military has ordered 160 of these prototypes and is actively using them in the Afghan theatre to locate potential hidden threats and provide unprecedented situational awareness.
It is more or less the reconnaissance helicopter of the modern battlefield, although it is not designed to be larger than a children's toy.
The Black Hornet Nano fits easily in the palm of an adult, measures 4 inches long, 1 inch wide, and weighs just 0.6 ounces. It features a simple box-shaped body that contains a small camera whose signal is wirelessly sent to a handheld terminal that displays full-motion video or still images captured by the Black Hornet.
The terminal is also used to control small systems in flight. A thin shaft at the rear of the fuselage supports a twin-blade tail rotor to balance the torque generated by the main rotor, another twin-blade assembly. Power is supplied by the on-board battery.
