History
While known for his deep roots in military hardware, Sukhoi launched the Superjet 100 line of regional airliners in 2011 with Armavia, a startup customer in Armenia. In June 2013, the Group achieved a new milestone with the delivery of a Superjet 100 prototype to Interjet's first western customer in Mexico. To date (2013), 28 twin-engine, state-of-the-art airliners have been produced through an unprecedented international effort with participants including European and American companies.
234 have been ordered, of which about 16 have been delivered (2013). Proposed operators include Aeroflot, Financial Leasing Company, Lao Central Airlines, Thai Eastern Airlines, Sky Airlines, Moscow Airlines and Transaero. The Superjet 100 is manufactured under the Sukhoi Civil Aircraft banner.
The Superjet 100 program includes technology and input from various major defense industry players, such as Alenia Aermacchi in Italy, SNECMA in France, Boeing in the United States, Thales in France and Honeywell in the United States. United Aircraft Corporation of Russia is the prime contractor for the French SNECMA and the Russian NPO Saturn engines.
Alenia Aermacchi also supports Western marketing through the Superjet International brand label.
Sukhoi developed the Superjet 100 not only to compete with Western passenger passenger products flooding the global market, but also to accommodate the aging fleet of Soviet-era Tupolev Tu-134 and Yakovlev Yak-42 aircraft (in Known in NATO nomenclature as "Hardshell" ") or "Clobber"). As such, the Superjet 100 manages a state-of-the-art all-glass digital cockpit, fly-by-wire controls and engines, all introduced in 2008 .The cockpit includes five large color displays separated by a clean instrument panel and consoles for the two crew members.
The controls are of the side stick type and have a very modern look. The cabin has an aisle and the seats are located in the aisle and in the luggage compartment sides, which is common on other aircraft of this type.
Its overall exterior configuration is very traditional, the fuselage is very well streamlined, and the flight deck is set forward. The hull is lined with portholes for the passenger cabin and sport-style entry/exit doors. The machine The wings are swept back and mounted low on the fuselage, each wing managing an underwater engine nacelle.
The tail is typical of aircraft class with a single vertical tail and low level. The landing gear is designed for typical runway use and includes A pair of two-wheeled main legs and a two-wheeled front leg. All of these are telescopic in their respective positions.
Work on the Superjet 100 began in 2002, when Boeing and Sukhoi entered into a limited agreement to design and develop a new regional jet. Boeing will provide consulting/marketing services, while Sukhoi will manage everything else. Other contractors then found themselves stretching from the US and Canada to Europe and Asia in a truly international effort.
A prototype was released in November 2004 and officially supported by the Russian government in August 2005 (the program will cost about $1.4 billion). Flight tests began in January 2007, paving the way for engine development (the engine was tested on a modified Ilyushin IL-76 carrier platform).
After the prototype was completed, the first flight was recorded on May 19, 2008, and development continued into 2009 while receiving domestic and international orders. By the end of 2009, three prototypes had been completed. This year, the product was officially unveiled at the Paris Air Show to stimulate customer interest in the product.
Russian certification in 2010 added a fourth prototype, followed by European certification in 2012.
Superjet configuration
The Superjet is available in four different models named SSJ 100-75, SSJ 100-75LR, SSJ 100-95 and SSJ 100-95LR. All brands will have two crew members with the same wingspan (91 feet) and height (33 feet 9 inches). All are powered by 2 PowerJet SaM146 turbofan engines providing 13,500 lbs to 17,500 lbs of thrust (developed by French SNECMA and Russian NPO Saturn).
The 100-75 model has a barrel length of 86 feet 9 inches, while the 100-95 model has a barrel length of 98 feet 3 inches. The maximum takeoff weights for the four models are 85,600 lbs, 93,200 lbs, 101,100 lbs and 109,000 lbs. The Superjet is designed to operate at altitudes up to 41,000 feet and reach speeds of 541 mph, although cruising is typically done at 511 mph.
The main difference between the four brands, aside from subtle size differences, is their interior passenger configuration. The 100-75 model will be available in a 1- or 2-class layout and can accommodate 68 to 83 people, while the 100-95 model will have a similar 1- or 2-class layout and can accommodate 86 to 103 people.
Jakarta accident
The Superjet 100 was the subject of a very public (and fatal) accident on May 9, 2012. On a demonstration flight from Halimpedanakusuma Airport in Jakarta (Indonesia) with 45 people on board, the Superjet 100 received clearance to descend to 5,900 feet. At this point contact with the aircraft was lost. The wreck was later found after hitting the side of Mount Salak. Unsurprisingly, in such a crash, no survivors were found.
The cause of the crash is believed to be pilot error after it was determined that the plane's collision avoidance system was functioning properly.
The Russians and Iranians are negotiating the use of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 as Iran's main passenger plane to replace the aging jet fleet currently in service.
