History of Yakovlev Yak-25 (torch/mandrake)

The Yak-25 (NATO codename "Flashlight") was another jet fighter design introduced by the Soviet Union in the early days of the Cold War. The system was designed to patrol the northernmost tip of Soviet territory from advanced NATO and American reconnaissance aircraft.

It wasn't built as a straight-up dog fighter (the system was limited to a 2 x 37mm gun configuration), it was used more as a mobile watchtower with impressive stamina. The system will be used in fighter, reconnaissance and advanced reconnaissance platforms during production.

The Yak-25's game name is a chance to walk and use the mighty nosed Sokol radar. The radar system itself is such a large assembly technology that the nose cone appears significantly elongated and enlarged. The engines are mounted under a central wing monoplane design with a 45-degree swept back. A vertical stabilizer bar is installed at the rear to hold the two smaller lift components.

The twin gun assemblies are located under and in the front of the fuselage.

The two-crew Yak-25 Flashlight will be the first Soviet fighter jet with radar and all-weather capability. The Yak-25 line will be in service until 1964, when the entire line will be phased out and replaced by a new generation jet-powered design.

The Yak-25 spawned a dedicated high-altitude reconnaissance platform in the form of the Yah-25RV "Mandrake" and another reconnaissance variant in the form of the Yak-26 "Mangrove".
