History

The pathway to becoming a military fighter pilot is still through the main propeller training platform, in addition to a lot of time spent on Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT). Yakovlev Design Bureau (Irkut Corporation) is developing the Yak-152 for the former, which relies on proven qualities such as tandem seating arrangements and traditional fuselage/wing configurations.

The aircraft has low wings and wheeled retractable tricycle landing gear, and as usual has its single engine mounted in the nose, which drives a three-bladed propeller. The Yak-152 is intended as a stepping stone to other forms of AJT, such as the Yakovlev Yak-130 (detailed elsewhere on this site).

The aircraft is built around a reliable, robust frame that promises to keep procurement, maintenance and repair costs to a minimum. Product dimensions include a length of 7.8 meters, a height of 3.11 meters, and a wingspan of 8.8 meters. The maximum take-off weight (MTOW) is 1,500 kg. Performance specifications include a top speed of 500 kilometers per hour, a service ceiling of 4,000 meters and a range of up to 1,000 kilometers. A built-in short-field mass enables the aircraft to operate from smaller, unprepared disengagements, and the landing gear is reinforced to support this robust function.

These airframes are designed to last 10,000 hours or 30 years.

Inside the cockpit, the aircraft is equipped with state-of-the-art avionics to prepare students for modern flight fundamentals and advance training to aerobatics and advanced levels. The student is in the front cockpit and the instructor is in the rear cockpit (neither position is pressurized), and a dual control scheme is used, allowing either pilot to control the aircraft.

The multi-function display (MFD) makes the workspace very modern, and if something goes wrong, both crew members are equipped with ejection seats (SKS-94M series).

Power initially advertised came from a 360 hp M-14X diesel turboprop. It has now been confirmed that the aircraft will be equipped with a RED Aircraft A03 V-12 series 500hp diesel engine.

To date (2016), the Russian Ministry of Defense has committed to purchase 150 Yak-152 primary trainers. A prototype was launched in mid-June 2016.
