History of Bell X-1

Bell Aircraft was contracted to build three XS-1 ("Experimental Supersonic 1") rocket planes for use by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and the United States Air Force (USAF), the predecessors of today's NASA. - Recognized as the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) during World War II. The primary purpose of the program is to collect transonic and supersonic data to help better understand the operating environment therein, and to apply this research to the design of next-generation jets in service with the U.S. Air Force.

Construction of the vehicle took place in 1945, an effort that gained momentum in 1944 as war intensified in Europe and the Pacific. When the plane finally took shape, it was called the Bell X-1, inheriting its signature silhouette and bright orange livery.

The X-1's primary propulsion system became the XLR-11 liquid-fueled rocket engine (from Reaction Motors, Incorporated), with a four-chamber arrangement. As a rocket, the system will only provide a brief window of constant thrust until its fast-burning fuel runs out.

During this time window, important flight data will be collected for later evaluation. The multi-chamber approach allows the pilot to vary thrust in 1,500-pound thrust increments. Buried in the X-1's stout circular fuselage (said to mimic the shape of a .50 caliber cartridge), the engines consisted of straight, mid-mounted wing mainframes, a standard single vertical stabilizer and a set of forward cockpits. The only pilot - who doesn't even have the benefit of an ejection seat - flies the plane within the confines of this cockpit, which sits under a thick glass but flush canopy. The plane is equipped with its own landing gear, which enables the pilot to perform a controlled landing (glide) without a motor.

The overall structure of the aircraft is made of aluminum and has a length of 9.4 meters, a wingspan of 8.5 meters and a height of 3.3 meters.

The X-1B was used for high-speed thermal research missions and was fitted with improved wings as well as small "reactive" missiles for more precise control. The first flight took place in October 1954, and the brand ended in early 1958 due to structural fatigue. The aircraft was able to complete a total of 27 flights.

The X-1C only saw the model stage before it was cancelled. It was originally intended for weapons testing, but was reversed with the arrival of a suitable US Air Force attack aircraft that could be retrofitted.

X-1D for heat transfer studies, with low pressure fuel system and updated avionics. The aircraft completed a successful glide test flight on July 24, 1951, although the front legs failed on landing, causing damage. After repairs, the car was lost in a fuel explosion on August 22, 1951, on its only powered flight attempt. With changes to reduce the likelihood of fuel explosions, the X-1E was born.

The first flight (without engine) took place on December 15, 1955, and the aircraft eventually reached Mach 3 during the test period, making a total of 26 flights. Structural fatigue also eventually left the logo behind, as it was later shelved.

The completed aircraft, the X-1, X-1B, and X-1E, are preserved as museum exhibits and are now in the collections of the National Air and Space Museum (Washington, DC), the National Museum of the United States Air Force (Dayton, Ohio), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Bureau Dryden Flight Research Center (Edwards AFB, CA). The data collected by the program made it one of the most important U.S. (and world aviation) test aircraft ever conducted, as it helped drive the new supersonic designs that followedmilitary and civilian.
