History
The Lockheed YF-22 is the development of the 5th generation F-22 "Raptor" air superiority fighter in service with the United States Air Force (USAF) today. The design is a state-of-the-art technology demonstrator for a team led by defense contractor Lockheed Martin, but also includes typical industry rivals such as Boeing and General Dynamics.
The YF-22 successfully competed with the Northrop Grumman team, which submitted the impressive YF-23 "Black Widow II" (detailed elsewhere on this page). The YF-22 entered service as the "F-22A" and ushered in an era of fifth-generation fighter jets designed to defeat all known enemy threats by relying on supercruise technology, stealth qualities and advanced airborne systems and weapons .
The US Air Force urges local industry to develop a new air superiority fighter in response to increasing threaten. Eastern United States. This prompted the service to establish the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) program in the 1980s to find such a solution.
Launched in June 1981, the program would cost an astonishing $86. $6 billion. Proposals from U.S. defense contractors such as Boeing, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin, Northrop, and McDonnell Douglas were accepted, leading to a split in 1986 into two clear teams, each supporting a single design - Lockheed German led "YF-22" and Northrop - led "YF-23".
The program ended in August 1991 with the selection of the Lockheed option.
