History of Dornier Do P. 247/6

The Dornier Do P. 247/6 project appeared in late 1944 as a short-lived design study "Pfeil" (Arrow ) Twin Engine Fighter - This heavy platform integrates its engines in an in-line arrangement, one at the front of the cockpit and the other at the rear. The result was one of the fastest production piston-powered fighters of the entire war. Based on this experience, the company's engineers attempted to create another effective fighter/fighter-bomber, this time focusing on a true "thrust" engine arrangement.

The engine is behind the pilot, the nose assembly has now been hollowed out to facilitate weapons mounting, and the pilot's position has been moved forward amidships to provide excellent cockpit/nose visibility.

This research resulted in a single-seat, single-engine design that has the potential to be mass-produced at high speeds - especially since the landing gear and tail will be carried over directly from the existing Do 335. The powerplant chosen was the proposed, experimental Junkers Jumo 213T liquid-cooled, turbocharged inverted-V engine operating at 2,000 hp to drive the four-bladed propeller unit (via an extended shaft) located at the extreme end of the fuselage. The engine itself is buried in the center of the rear of the body, with the cockpit forward.

The air intakes are located at the wing roots on the sides of the fuselage. The main plane sits low on the side of the fighter while gaining some backswing to accommodate higher flight speeds.

The tail is inherited directly from the Do 335, with a cruciform flat pattern of dorsal and pelvic fins and standard horizontal planes. A fairly modern retractable tricycle landing gear will be used for ground operation.

Given that high-speed fighters keep their engines in the tail, the nose assembly can be some kind of modular component of the design, as it can accommodate weapons, but also specialized equipment for special mission roles - an antenna system can be installed to allow the fighter to act as a night fighter Let.

With all this, engineers estimate their design top speed is 515-520 mph, which would make it faster than the twin-engine Do 335 (475 mph). Beyond that, no further performance data is known. Dimensions include a 39.3-foot wingspan.

Again, this Dornier-Jager proposal joins many other proposals put forward by industrial players in an attempt to meet the needs of the Luftwaffe during the war. The project never made it past the paper stage.
