The modern Indian Air Force (IAF) is relatively new in history compared to the world heavyweights, but has achieved success in supporting the local To advance the military made industrial efforts to turn the country into a self-sufficient world military power. The voyage included efforts such as India's first fighter jet, the HAL HF-24 "Marut" ("Storm Spirit").
The design of the aircraft was led by renowned German aeronautical engineer Kurt Tank (creator of the classic WWII-era Focke-Wulf Fw 190 piston-engined fighter) and incorporated Indian engineering from Hindustan Aircraft Limited (HAL).
Despite their promise, only 147 Maruts were completed, and the aircraft was only in service for a short period of time, being retired from front-line service in 1985 after a career that began in the 1960s. It was always in service with the IAF only, not exported in any form, and its legacy aircraft proved costly to develop and had only marginal results in service.
Years after World War II (1939-1945) - and finally after independence from the British Crown - the Indian Air Force Staff embarked on a fighter jet project that would bring a new form of independence to the country. This is military dependence from abroad. With little or no experience developing turbojets, the ministry hired Kurt Tanks to help open a new chapter for the Indian Air Force. Tanks began to build aircraft using the experience gained during and after the war with swept-wing jet-powered designs.
In addition to his expertise, about a dozen other German engineers joined the fray and moved to India to help with this challenging project.
Before Tank arrived, he was working with his team in Argentina on a new swept-wing jet fighter for the Argentine military. One design concept became the FMA IA-43 "Pulqui" ("Arrow"), which had the classic 1950s fighter profile - nose air intakes, forward cockpit, "T-shaped" tail and swept-wing main aircraft.
Its qualities were marked by the development of aircraft such as the post-war Focke-Wulf Ta 183 "Huckebein" jet fighter. Although the Argentine aircraft made its maiden flight on June 27, 1950, only five examples were completed and the design ultimately failed.
Design work on an all-weather, Mach 2 capable Indian fighter began in 1957. The "X-241" was developed as a full-fledged research aircraft to justify the concept at low cost.
The first flight (by towing) was on April 3, 1959, and more than 85 flights followed until a defective front wheel leg caused the crash to land. A fully functional prototype took to the air on June 17, 1961, consisting of two turbojets, each producing nearly 5,000 pounds of thrust, in a single-seat design and low swept along a simple cylindrical fuselage wing.
The empennage has a vertical fin, and low-level elevators are mounted on both sides of the fuselage.
