Grumman F8F Bearcat History
In many ways, the Grumman F8F Bearcat is the pinnacle of American piston engine fighter design. Arriving in the final months of World War II, the aircraft lacked overall combat action in all theaters, but it still managed to leave a legacy of power and performance even in the midst of the jet age. Its powerful twin hornet radial piston engines and thoughtful design make it an excellent aircraft, and what impact this fighter would have had if it had appeared in time for the greatest aerial confrontation in history, we can only imagine .
Grumman's fighter jets date back to the early 1930s. Grumman found success early in the war with its supreme F4F Wildcat fightera fighter that unexpectedly withstood the onslaught of Japanese aggression until the impressive batch of the classic Grumman F6F Hellcat fighter was completed.
With such a pedigree, Grumman's attempts to improve on their "Cat" line were inevitable, and the F8F Bearcat wouldn't disappoint, just that there would be no more wars to fight when it's done.
The original design was inevitably more promising than it first seemed, and a new and improved model was completed in the XF8F-2 Bearcat prototype, with a total of two aircraft built. The XF8F-2 came into production in 1948 with a Pratt & Whitney R-2800-30W radial piston engine and 4 x 20mm gun armament as standard.
Changes to this new model also include a taller rear wing and a larger rudder assembly with a revised fairing. At least 293 F8F-2 series will enter production.
Like the previous Panda, the F8F-2 was generated as a night fighter platform for the F8F-2N. Like the previous F8F-1N, the F8F-2N is equipped with an APS-19 radar system. The F8F-2P became a photo reconnaissance model equipped with cameras and related equipment.
Two 20mm guns have been preserved from their combat origins. When the type was phased out in 1952, the end of the Bearcat line was in sight. The performance of the F8F Bearcat is in no way inferior. Top speed is 421 mph and climb rate exceeds 4,570 feet per minute. The plane has a service ceiling of 38,700 feet, while its range is limited to 1,105 miles.
In fact, Bearcats are known to outperform the earliest jet-powered designs, and that's the design's success.
In addition to the original 4 x 12.7mm machine gun weapon and later 4 x 20mm cannon weapon, the Panda is armed with 4 x 5" unguided rockets and 1,000 lb bombs, making the Panda a natural and deadly close-in weapon support aircraft.
The sole operator of Bearcat (and the US Navy) became France, Thailand and South Vietnam. Approximately 1,266 pandas will eventually be produced. Today, a handful of airworthy pandas survive and are used for air shows and competitions. Bearcats were eventually replaced in U.S. Navy service by McDonnell F2H Banshee and Grumman F9F Panther series jets.
France used pandas in the war in Indochina. Beginning in 1955, the surviving French pandas were eventually transferred to the newly formed Vietnam Air Force.
The F8F Bearcat became Grumman's last piston engine fighter and his faster piston engine product. Famous panda pilots include Grumman test pilot Corky Meyer and future astronaut Neil Armstrong (Panda is reportedly the latter's favorite plane).
