History
The Soviet Army never shied away from adding large-caliber artillery to its inventory and put hundreds of 2S5 "Giatsint-S" ("Hyacinth") self-propelled guns (SPG) into service. The vehicle is centered on the same 152mm gun used in the 2A36 Giatsint-B towed gun (simultaneously designed), thus retaining the inherent capabilities of the weapon, while providing maneuverability and wider tactical value through the increased orbital handling characteristics of the 2S5 . mobile form.
Design work on the 2S5 ran from 1967 to 1974 and production ran from 1976 to 1991. The 2S5 officially entered service in 1975 and is now (2014) in service with the Finnish-Belarusian Armed Forces (as "152 TELAK 91" ") . ) and the Russian Army and Navy.
There are several hundred in Russian inventory, with less than 600 active.[ /p]
The heart of the 2S5 is a 28-ton vehicle with a flat armored hull structure. A typical operator consists of five people, and the vehicle must be combined with an ammunition transporter to fire its projectilesseveral additional crew members were added to increase the human input to the system. Overall length is 27 feet, 10.6 feet wide and 9 feet high. Armor protection at the thickest fairing is 15mm.
Power is provided by a 520-horsepower diesel engine with a top speed of 38 mph and a range of 311 miles. The chassis is completely suspended on a torsion bar suspension system.
The track wheel system consists of six pairs of rubber tire wheels mounted on one side of the fuselage with four track return rollers. The drive sprocket is in the front and the chain idler is in the back.
152mm gun and its swivel/elevation mounted on top of the hull. A plate at the rear of the vehicle is lowered before launch to suppress the (and very violent) recoil effect that occurs during launch.
Like many other vehicles of the era, the 2S5 featured the NBC ("Nuclear, Biological, Chemical") suite to protect its occupants in the event of a nuclear war with the West.
