History

The successful use of self-propelled, wheeled or tracked rocket launchers against the Germans during World War II (1939-1945) prompted the Soviet Union to continue developing such weapons after the war. A new system was developed in 1947 and the "BMD-20" was introduced in 1952. The design includes a ZiS-151A military truck (three-axle, 6x6 wheels) mated to a quad-missile launch vehicle that fires the MD-20F series of surface-to-surface battlefield missiles.

The model was eventually exported to several countries allied with the Soviet Union, including Cuba and North Korea.

The vehicle weighs 8.7 tons when in use, with a total length of 7.2 meters, a width of 2.3 meters and a height of 2.8 meters. Drive power is provided by a 92 hp petrol engine, which can travel at speeds of up to 60 km/h and have a range of up to 520 km.

The basic truck design contains the engine in the front compartment as part of the enclosed cab. Typically, eight crew members are assigned to the functions of the vehicle.

Above the rear of the truck is the missile launch section on the trainable mount. The assembly is equipped with four ready-to-launch rockets with a caliber of 200 mm and a weight of 195 kg. The weapons have a range of 19 kilometers, and the entire batch can be fired in less than 5 seconds, and reloading takes just as long.

Supplies are provided by support vehicles.

The use of BMD-20 series MLRS vehicles is still known to the North Korean military despite the Cold War era. These vehicles are believed to be dependent on the ZiL-157 series of military trucks rather than the original ZiS-151A series models.
