History

The Schneider Char d'Assault tank was the first real French attempt to differentiate between a dedicated tank and a dedicated self-propelled artillery system. However, like its predecessors, the system never lived up to its potential due to the design theory of fusing a long fuselage onto a set of short rails.

Practice has shown that this combination means that the cutter cannot handle any unevenness in the floor.

Tailor is a char d'assault brainchild of Colonel J. E. Estienne is a complete design developed by Eugene Brillie under the Schneider Company brand. Both visited the United States of America to study and study the Holt series of tractors - more specifically "Baby Holts" - using different tractor and chassis arrangements.

The resulting design, known as Tractuer Blinde et Arme, was subsequently produced for the French army.

The Schneider Char d'Assault is the most basic tank design, generally consistent with earlier tanks. It has a boxy body design with an acute angle at the front. The system is mounted on shortened rails, allowing the front and rear fuselage sections to hover above the rail assembly. Primary armament consists of a 75mm main gun. Two additional 8mm Hotchkiss machine guns were mounted on locating balls on either side of the upper hull for self-defense.

Tailors can dress up to 7 employees.

Once Schneider became available, their design flaws quickly became apparent. The short tractor components are useless on flat roads, as the slender hull protrudes fore and aft causing the system to get bogged down. As a result, the system suffered catastrophic losses from enemy fire, rendering the entire concept almost useless.

During a given offensive, no less than 57% of the 132 Schneider tanks deployed were destroyed in this way.
