FV432 APC History

The FV432 was a rugged but unremarkable armoured personnel carrier for the British Army, of which over 3,000 were built. Similar to other faceted chassis of this type, the FV432 continues to serve other roles (electronic warfare, battlefield recovery, artillery command, etc.), although it is not the primary frontline APC role for which it was originally designed.

The FV432 series APCs have been replaced by modern "Warrior" Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) in the British Army inventory.

FV432 became the largest number of FV430 related vehicles. It ended up being a 15-ton factory with a total length of 5.25 meters, a width of 2.8 meters and a height of 2.28 meters. There is a standard two-operator inside and can accommodate 11 combat-ready units.

Armor protection protects the occupant and vital working components from small arms fire and artillery jets, while local defense is provided by the 7.62mm L7 General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG). Self-screening capability is achieved through the use of six smoke grenade launchers.

Driven by a 240 hp Rolls-Royce K60 multi-fuel unit. There are five twin-tire wheels on one side of the fuselage (full suspension for off-road touring) with the drive sprocket in front and the idler in the rear. Two track deflection wheels are involved.

At a road speed of almost 52 km/h, the range reaches 580 km.

After the early engagements of the Iraq War - during which the FV430 personnel carrier proved vulnerable to enemy IEDs and mortars - the vehicle was heavily armoured as described elsewhere on this page The FV430 Mk III "Bulldog". Some of these useful devices were put into use in August 2007.
