History of the M1991 (Model 1991)
Much of North Korea's ground firepower relies on self-propelled, towed, and rocket-launched artillery systems. The M-1991 belongs to the Multiple Rocket Launch System (MLRS) weapon category and has been in service since the late 1980s/early 1990s.
Inspired by Soviet-era truck-based missile launchers, the M-1991 is a locally produced wheeled system that marks one of the longest-range missile launchers in service with the North Korean military.
The M-1991 succeeded the M-1985 series of vehicles. It features a military-grade 6x6 heavy-duty truck chassis with an enclosed front cab. The activation assembly is arranged on a trainable stand above the rear of the vehicle.
A 22 x 240 mm battlefield missile (surface-to-surface) is housed in the launch vehicle's triple tube assembly. Each missile can be equipped with a different warhead to suit a specific role on the battlefield. Standard equipment is a form of high-explosive fragmentation fragmentation (HE-FRAG) suitable for use against "soft" targets such as troop build-ups and lightly armored vehicles.
Alternatively, the warhead could take the form of a chemical or incendiary bomb that would have a more severe impact on the recipient.
The missile has a range of 40 to 60 km and the launcher is capable of firing 22 missiles in 44 seconds. This makes the M-1991 one of the more powerful missile attack vehicles in North Korea's inventory after the KN-09 series.
The truck-based chassis offered some off-road capability and good ground clearance, but had its roots in foreign Cold War designs. The diesel power unit drives three axles, ensuring a top speed of 80 km/h and a range of up to 800 km.
Due to the vehicle's natural height, the wading depth can be up to 1.2 meters.
