NORINCO QSL-92

History

In order to bring the lethality of the HJ-9 "Red Arrow" third-generation anti-tank missile (ATGM) to armored targets, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) decided to introduce the WZ550 4x4 light armored wheeled vehicle, which was attached to the HJ -9 ATGM system. The result was the QSL-92, which, despite its Cold War origins, is still in service with some number of PLAs.

The suitability of the WZ550 vehicle has been proven in decades of use. It is compact and lightweight, protecting the occupant from small arms fire and artillery jets. Sloped sides and flat glacis panels help it withstand direct hits from various fairings along the hull. Oversized wheels provide excellent traction and ground clearance for traversing rough terrain.

The fuselage has access doors on the underside (near the front axle), the fuselage roofline and the rear surface of the fuselage.

On the QSL-92, the HJ-9 system is located on a 360-degree swivel mount at the rear of the fuselage roof, providing a full arc of fire regardless of the current orientation of the bow. The missiles are arranged in dual launch on either side of the optics/range group.

Elevation is also built into the transmitter unit.

Each missile has a deployment range of up to 5,500 meters and relies on a laser beam to reach the target - the operator needs line of sight. Powered by a solid-fuel rocket motor, the missile is topped with a tandem HEAT (High Explosive Anti-Tank) warhead capable of penetrating 1,100 to 1,200 mm RHAe.

Detonation is via a contact fuze and provides good lethality even against the most modern main battle tanks (MBTs).
