History of the Otoka Cobra

Otokar Cobra is an armored vehicle developed for the Turkish Armed Forces. It is specifically classified as an "Infantry Motor Vehicle" and is intended as a light, lightly armored, multi-purpose Army service modernization solution.

The Cobra features high ground clearance for excellent off-road capability, and the V-shaped hull diverts blasts from mines and other hidden blast threats. The vehicle entered service in 1997 and has already been used in combat service on the ground in Afghanistan, Georgia and Kosovo as well as on the ground against the Turkish army against the PKK.

Two main variants of the Cobra have emerged - the original Cobra vehicle and the updated Cobra II (the latter debuted in 2013). The original featured a GM V8 6.5-liter 190-horsepower liquid-cooled turbodiesel, while the Cobra II featured a water-cooled 6.7-liter 281-horsepower six-cylinder turbo.

Both vehicles use a helical coil suspension system and similar shapes. There is a slight difference in size between the two, with the Cobra II being heavier (12,000kg vs 6,200kg), larger (5.6m x 2.5m x 2.2m) and accommodating 2+7 (instead of 1+8).

The Cobra has a range of up to 752 km, while the Cobra II brand has a maximum range of 700 km. Road speed is 115 km/h vs 110 km/h. Amphibious capabilities are built into each vehicle, with propellers mounted on the rearmost corners of the hull.

Weapon options are variable, but vehicles are traditionally equipped with 7.6mm or 12.7mm/14mm turrets. 5mm machine gun and/or 40mm automatic grenade launcher (AGL).

The base vehicle design forms the basis for other required battlefield forms, including ambulances, observation vehicles, and anti-tank missile delivery vehicles (ATGMs).

To date (2017), Cobra has been certified as a joint Azerbaijan, Algeria, Bahrain, Bengaldesh, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Maldives, Mauritania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Nigeria, Pakistan, Slovenia, Syria and the Arab Union Emirate (UAE). The United Nations has also used this type.

A small portion of the collection fell into ISIS forces in Syria and was used against their former operators.
