History

The M1939 37mm anti-aircraft weapon system is based on the 1935 Bofors 25mm Type 1933 cannon system. It served with the Soviet Army and Navy during World War II, shooting down 14,657 Axis aircraft and 905 rounds per aircraft destroyed. Continuous firing at 60 rounds per minute can be achieved.

The M1938 is also not limited to anti-aircraft defense, and can also be used as an anti-tank gun system if desired. Single-installation systems were developed into dual-installation systems with limited exports.

The M1938 anti-aircraft weapon system is designated as Type 55 in Communist China's inventory. It was replaced in the Soviet inventory in the 1950s by the ZSU-57-2 anti-aircraft gun system.
