History
The Wanshan Y-12B CDMS (Coastal Defense Missile System) is a modern, operational, mobile Chinese military solution designed to launch a land-based version The YJ-12 anti-ship/land attack cruise missiles ("YJ-12B"). The resulting vehicle is an "all-in-one" solution for the Chinese armed forces, combining multi-wheeled military heavy trucks with multi-launcher components to effectively counter looting enemy ships and land-based targets.
In the arrangement, a multi-faceted 22.5 ton WS2600 10x8 4WD truck (from Wanshan Special Vehicles, China) serves as the launch vehicle for the YJ-12B cruise missile with a deployable three-shot launcher mounted on the rear of the chassis . The truck has a crew compartment with windows above the bow and a full launch station in the stern. Dimensions include an overall length of 53.6 feet, a width of 10 feet, and a height of 9.25 feet. A typical operator consists of seven to eight employees who perform various functions throughout the weapon system.
The truck can transport payloads up to 42.5 tons.
Under the hood is a 544-horsepower German Deutz diesel engine that gives it a "leg" of 405 mph and a top road speed of 45 mph (which allows it to keep up with the workhorse). The truck's natural high ground clearance coupled with its four-wheel drive arrangement ensures some capability on rough/rough terrain (off-road driving), while its inherent mobile aspect allows the vehicle to launch its war load and then flee the scene as needed.
The launcher assembly was designed to accommodate three rockets in a staggered, side-by-side arrangement. The missiles are 21 feet long and 2.48 feet in diameter, topped with a variable warhead that weighs between 455 and 1,100 pounds. The integrated guidance system is terminal, and the missile can reach a top speed of Mach 4 - depending on deployment altitude and the warhead in the game - giving the target little time to react.
The missile reportedly has a range of up to 250 miles, but that again depends on the operational altitude and the warhead used. The rocket is powered by a ramjet engine supported by a booster propulsion system.
Platforms such as the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) H-6 strategic medium bomber and the Type 051B destroyer series serving the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) also actively use the same missiles.
