Canon de 274 modele 93/96 Berceau History
Railroad guns, characterized by massive structures with naval artillery mounted on rail carriages, played a significant role in both World War I and World War II, serving as powerful psychological and propaganda tools. Despite their lack of pinpoint accuracy, these mobile artillery units proved effective in conflicts until the emergence of ballistic missiles, marking the end of the railroad gun era.
The Canon de 274 modele 93/96 "Berceau," developed by the French company Schneider during World War I, exemplifies this era of railroad guns. Deployed in 1918, it featured a 37.8 ft barrel assembly, an armored casing, and quad-axle track bogies for rail navigation. While its firing rate was limited to one shot every five minutes, the gun demonstrated a range of up to 14 miles and fired various projectiles, including armor-piercing caps, semi-armor-piercing rounds, and incendiary variants.
The success of the Canon de 274 modele 93/96 Berceau project laid the foundation for subsequent French railroad artillery, driving the development of newer, longer-range solutions during World War I. Over time, fatigue-induced wear on the original barrel assemblies led to modifications, including re-drilling for new calibers and revisions to the magazines. This evolution in design eventually led to improved models like the Canon de 274 modele 1887/1893 "Glissement," enhancing elevation and engagement range until 1917.
