History of Admiral Panteleev (548)

Admiral Panteleyev is one of a series of nine powerful Udaloy-class destroyers serving the modern Russian naval fleet. The team was supposed to have fifteen men, but only completed thirteen, two of which were canceled. Nine are still in service today (2020).

The class is considered a frigate in the Russian Navy's inventory and fulfills a key role in anti-submarine warfare (ASW) as it is equipped with various counters and solutions to counter very real threats on the high seas. Her designs date back to the late Cold War (1947-1991), when Admiral Panteleev was placed on May 24, 1987.

She was launched in 1988, but did not enter service until May 1, 1992 - by then the Soviet Union had collapsed and the Russian Navy was reborn. Modernization makes warships still viable on the battlefield today.

The in-service Panteleyev displaces 6,100 tons under standard load and 7,775 tons under full load. The overall length is 535 feet, the beam is 62 feet, and the draft is 26 feet.

Power is provided by a COGAG (Combined Gas and Gas) unit with 4 gas turbines producing 120,000 horsepower, allowing the warship to reach a top speed of 35 knots and a range of up to 10,500 nautical miles (cruising at 14 knots).

There are 300 crew members on board. The ship is also equipped with a limited wing that can support up to two Kamov Ka-27 "Helix" anti-submarine warfare helicopters - vehicles that give Panteleyev considerable range and flexibility.

A full-service hangar and helipad are integrated into the vessel's design, located aft.

Armament is a mix of projectile and missile based solutions. 2 x 100mm turret deck guns are included along with 4 x AK-630 Close-In Weapon System (CIWS). 2 x 4 SS-N-14 anti-submarine missiles are installed, as well as 8 x vertical launchers supporting SA-N-9 surface-to-air missile (SAM).

In addition, 8 x 553 mm (21.8 in) torpedo tubes are housed in two quadruple launchers and two RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket (ASROC) launchers.

Cutaway view of the ship showing twin turrets and one gun, arranged in layers above the forecastle. The quadruple turret is arranged directly in front of the bridge superstructure. The bridge section contains various sensors, tracking and communication equipment.

Pyramid-shaped skeletal masts can be seen aft of the bridge section, while flat pipes line the midships. Helipad and hangar facilities are located aft.

Admiral Panteleyev currently serves in the Russian Navy's Pacific Fleet and has been deployed in anti-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia. In 2012, she participated in RIM of the PACific, which involved players from all over the world.

Despite her Cold War roots, she will remain a formidable ship for the foreseeable future, vital to the strength of the Russian Navy - operating jointly with Sovremennyy-class destroyers in air defense and anti-surface/anti-submarine missions.
