History of CNS Type 035 (Ming)
During the Cold War, 133 "Romeo-class" attack submarines of Soviet origin were completed and eventually operated by organizations such as the Soviet Union itself, China (and "Type 033"), North Korea, and other Soviet Union countries/states. For the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), this design was further developed to form the basis for an improved version, becoming the "Type 035". This fleet expansion ultimately includes 23 vessels, including the base Type 035 and subsequent design standard Types 035A, 035G and 035B (as well as export designations).
The class and subclasses were introduced in 1974, 1982, 1990 and 2000, respectively, and for some time constituted a significant portion of China's underwater capabilities.
At the time of writing (2019), there are about 15 Ming-class ships still in service.
The Wuhan Ship Development and Design Institute was entrusted with the design, development and construction of China's indigenous underwater forces, a move that led directly to the arrival of the Type 035, also known as the "Ming Class". Both ships were built to 'improved Romeo' standards in the mid-1970s and further improvements were made through this work, resulting in the Type 035A - introduced in the early 1980s.
Four ships were produced according to this revised standard, the last of which entered service in 1990.
Newer Type 035G of 12 ships, launched in the 1990s and with improvements in crew comfort, operating systems and camouflage (one of them was damaged in April 2003 due to mechanical failure and cost during exercise and lost life). seventy crew). The series was subsequently modernized by the Type 035B, adding an improved sail, as well as changes to the hull and support for launching missiles from torpedo tubes.
These were added to four (or five, depending on the source) examples in 2000 and represent the most modern version of this Chinese submarine design.
The Type 035 and Type 035A variants were exported under the designation "ES5C", later supplemented by the improved "ES5D" (based on the ES5C with additional anti-ship capabilities). "ES5E" has been exported. Sonar fit differs between Model 035G and ES5F products.
To date, few foreign parties have shown interest in the Type 035, with the only notable commitment being Bangladesh making a contract for two Type 053G ships. The duo was delivered in November 2016 and launched the following March under the names BNS Nabajatra (S161) and BNS Joyjatra (S162).
The series features a conventional submarine design arrangement with center sail, tapered tail and cruciform tail assemblies. The nose cone is blunt and the diving surface is on the upper side of the fuselage. The sail has a stepped leading edge and a raised conning tower, while also housing the various range, sensor and communications masts available to the crew. Displacement of 1,600 tons on the surface and 2,100 tons underwater.
Power comes from 2 E390ZC-1 marine diesel engines producing 5,200 hp and driving two axles. The crew numbered approximately 57 people and the armament was concentrated on 6 x 533 mm front torpedo tubes and 2 x 533 mm rear torpedo tubes.
The ship can carry up to 16 torpedo reloads or 32 mines, as required.
Dimensions include 250' length, 25' beam and 17' draft.
