History of the Queen Elizabeth

The Royal Navy was the most powerful sea power during the First World War (1914-1918), and the enemy the German Reich, which was trying to counter it knew this through their own navy building. The Royal Navy has a duty to protect the British mainland and its overseas interests, and has invested a lot of money and manpower to keep the group well ahead of their enemies. One of the products that was eventually developed before the war was HMS Queen Elizabeth, a warship modeled after the 1906 HMS Dreadnought.

HMS Dreadnought rewrote the Naval Battleship Manual to introduce a "full cannon" in uniform. Steam powered mode with adequate armor protection and speed.

This ship eventually created an entire class of battleships, simply called "Dreadnought", while all previous battleships were obsolete and known as "Dreadnought" ships.

HMS Queen Elizabeth was itself a "super dreadnought", laid on 21 October 1912 and launched on 16 October 1913. She officially entered service on December 22, 1914just as World War II broke out in Europe in August of that year, and the French battlefield fell into trench warfare.

The naval battles of the conflict would become just as important as the trench and air battles that followed - typified by the classic Battle of Jutland, the largest naval battle of the entire war (and the only one involving numerous warships on both sides).

When completed, Queen Elizabeth had a displacement of 31,100 tons, a length of 646 feet, a beam of 90.5 feet, and a draft of 33.9 feet. Her crew totals between 950 and 1,300, depending on peacetime and wartime needs.

Her profile consisted of four main turrets (two front, two aft), two funnels and two masts, and her overall shape was that of a classic steel battleship of the period.

The HMS Queen Elizabeth offered the Navy a "novelty" when it introduced an oil-fired (rather than coal-fired) boiler propulsion system. Some have questioned the design direction because it relies on this volatile resource, often from far-flung lands like Persia, rather than the off-the-shelf, tried-and-true method of coal-fired boilers. Nonetheless, HMS Queen Elizabeth received 24 boilers connected to 4 direct drive turbines managing 4 75,000 SHP shafts. In addition to its streamlined hull, the ship is a fast warship capable of sailing at 24 knots.

She has a range of up to 8,600 nautical miles and a speed of 12.5 knots. She shipped 3,300 tons of oil.

Her armament, at the time of construction, consisted of 8 x 15" BL Mk I main guns in four main turrets, one with two guns. Turrets 1 and 2 were located on the bridge superstructure Fore, 3rd and 4th turrets are masted aft, facing aft. This allows for bow and stern attack angles with at least two turrets plus a full broadside, enabling all four turrets to function.

The main guns are 16 x 6" BL Mk XII guns were replaced for additional fire support. There are also 2 x 3 in. QF 20 cwt anti-aircraft guns (AA) for local defense, 4 x 3-pdr salutes and 4 x 21 in. (530 mm) torpedo tubes - the latter submerged.

HMS Queen Elizabeth was promptly commissioned into active duty in January 1915. As the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) joined the war on the side of the Allies (Germany, Austria-Hungary), in order to provide the Russians with another front in the East, the Queen Elizabeth joined the war with an ancient fleet of warships sailing from the Mediterranean waters where she was being tried. The Battle of Dardenier was part of the Overriding Campaign that took place from 19 February to 18 March 1915, in which the British and French forces were sent to capture the Ottoman defensive fortresses along the exploited waterway to the Sea of ??Marmara, and eventually lead the to Istanbul (Constantinople). In addition to fortresses, this force had to contend with mines, torpedo boats and mobile littoral artillery deployed by the Ottomans.

The operation proved unsuccessful, with seven Allied ships sunk in the battle, four damaged, and 700 killed. The Ottomans lost two former dreadnoughts and a minelayer in the conflict, killing 40 and wounding 78 others. The operation went down in naval history as an Ottoman victory and forced the ill-fated Gallipoli invasion (25 April 1915 - 9 January 1916)a disaster for the Allies in itself.

HMS Queen Elizabeth served as the flagship of General Sir Ian Hamilton in charge of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (MEF) during the Gallipoli campaign.

During the famous Battle of Jutland (31 May-1 June 1916), she had zero availability when she was in port and overhauled during the war. Between 1915-1916 she lost four 6" guns aft, offset by the purchase of 2 x 6" guns on the foredeck. During extra work in 1916, she lost the front building cannon.

Jutland proved tactically indecisive with the loss of battleships and crew deaths on both sides, but allowed the British Navy to retain control of the Northern Sea Route, further hampering the German war effort.

The war ended in an armistice in November 1918 due to internal political and social pressure on Germany, as well as external military pressure on the country and its allies. HMS Queen Elizabeth served as the flagship of the Atlantic Fleet during the interwar period. She held this post from 1919 to 1924, and then was appointed flagship of the Mediterranean Fleet from 1924 to 1929. Between 1926 and 1927, her hull was widened to accommodate the torpedo bulge, and her chimney was now set up as a wire slot.

She also received a 4 x 4 inch gun and a revised foremast. After completing her work, she returned to service with the Mediterranean Fleet in 1927 and then rejoined the Atlantic Fleet in 1929.

At the end of 1929, she returned to Mediterranean waters and worked there until 1937 - a prelude to World War II (1939-1945).

From 1937 to 1941, HMS Queen Elizabeth underwent extensive refit. Her original bridge layout was replaced by a more modern "tower" bridge design, which changed her image somewhat. She lost all original 6" support guns and replaced them with 20 x 4.5" QF Dual Purpose (DP) guns in 10 twin gun turrets.

Her propulsion system was also completely replaced, and her deck armor was improved. Solved armament issues and increased armor protection with a new Fire Control System (FCS).

A key installation is the catapult system used to launch seaplane reconnaissance aircraft, giving the ship an important vantage point on the horizon.

By the time the HMS Queen Elizabeth goes to sea again, Britain is fully involved in another world war in Europe. She was ordered to the Mediterranean to support ongoing British operations, and served as the Allies evacuated Crete in June 1941. In December of the same year, she was still operating in Mediterranean waters and docked on the Queen Elizabeth in Alexandria, Egypt, while HMS Valiant was attacked by Italian special forces using a small submarine called Maiale ("pig"), killing 9 And send ships to rest on the flat harbour floor.

This left no real Allied battleships fighting in the Mediterranean, which was a major cause for concern. The flat harbour floor gives the impression that the HMS Queen Elizabeth remains in combat condition while secretly making temporary repairs.

Seaworthy Queen Elizabeth was dispatched to Norfolk, USA in June 1942 to complete her full repair programme, arriving there in September. The Americans completed their long work in June 1943, and the ship returned to home waters between July and late 1944.

In January 1945, it joined the Eastern Fleet and supported Allied operations in the Pacific. Provides air defense and inshore shelling of key enemy positions - especially throughout Indonesia. She ended war operations in the Indian Ocean until she was placed in reserve status in August 1945.

The war ended in September, resulting in her being removed from the Naval Register a few years later on 7 July 1948 and sold to Arnott Young in 1949 for scrapping in Scotland.
