History of Steregushchiy (530) (Item 20380)
Steregushchiy represents the capital ships of ten powerful Steregushchiy-class frigates serving the modern Russian Navy. The vessel was laid by Severnaya Verf on December 21, 2001 in St. Petersburg, Russia, and launched on May 16, 2006.
The official commissioning took place on 14 November 2007 and Steregushchiy (530) is currently assigned to the Baltic Fleet.
The frigate holds its place in the warship class as the smallest type (by size and displacement) in each nation's navy. Due to the Steregushchiy's size and displacement, the West classifies the ship as a frigate - the second largest warship in the class.
The class was developed as a successor to the Cold War-era Grisha-class ships. Steregushchiy was born in "Project 20380", and all subsequent ships of this class will be completed according to the revised "Project 20381" standard.
When completed, Steregushchiy was 343 feet long, 38 feet wide, and had a draft of 12 feet. The standard load is 1800 tons, and the full load is 2200 tons. Power is provided by 4 Kolomna 16D49 series diesel engines rated at 23,664 hp with 2 axles in a CODAD (Combined Diesel and Diesel) arrangement for maximum fuel/speed efficiency.
Under ideal conditions, it can reach a top speed of 27 knots and a range of up to 3,800 nautical miles. The vessel can stay at sea for up to 15 days before needing to be refilled. Her staff complements 90 employees.
The aircraft carries Furke 2 series air search radar and Garpun-B/3Ts-25E/PLANK SHAVE surface search radar. Fire control of the deck guns is handled by Ratep 5P-10E "Puma" series systems, and sonar is covered by bow mounted Zarya-M and Vinyetka towed array systems.
Units of the GORIZONT-25 series make up the navigation kit. The TK-25E-5 ECM is suitable for electronic warfare, and countermeasures are 4 x PK-10 decoy launchers.
The armament is spearheaded by the 100mm A-190 Arsenal turret deck gun. 1 x Kashtan and 2 x AK-630M systems provide close range defense. A total of eight Uran Kh-35 anti-ship missile launchers are installed to deal with long-range surface threats.
2 x 4 330mm torpedo launchers complete the ship's main offensive armament. 2 x 14.5 trunnion mounted MTPU weapons and all personal weapons carried by the crew safety detachment provide extreme close range defense.
The steel hull of this warship is covered by a superstructure mainly based on composite materials. The superstructure is a continuous section located aft of the forecastle, not far from the aft helipad/hangar area. This warship is set up to support (launch/recover/service) a Kamov Ka-27 naval helicopter (detailed elsewhere on this page) or similar rotorcraft - these aircraft are equally capable of delivering on enemy submarines and surface ships Important attack/defense. The deck guns are located in the turret on the forecastle, and a raised platform with additional weapons can be seen. The bridge is integrated with the superstructure at the front of the warship in the usual way, with a tall, partially enclosed main mast mounted above and aft of the bridge section.
A second lower profile mast is located midship and stern. The mast supports the chimney structure, which is low and well integrated with the superstructure. Flat sides complete the ship's premium look and help reduce the warship's signature to snooping radar and weapon systems.
In this way, Steregushchiy is inherently stealthy.
The Russian Navy has announced that it will buy 20 to 30 refitted Steregushchiy ships.
