History of USS George Washington (CVN-73)

The aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN-73) is a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in service with the United States Navy. She is the sixth such ship in the Nimitz-class "supercarrier" and is named after the first US president, George Washington.

In a handful of deployments, she has demonstrated the strength and prowess of the U.S. Navy in oceans and seas around the world, becoming an integral part of the U.S. "show of force" offense and defense. in the world war on terror.

An entire workforce of 5,680 employees operates George Washington's various systems and subsystems. This includes a powerful air force of up to 2,480 personnel, responsible for managing a squadron of fighter jets, attack aircraft, special aircraft, transport aircraft and helicopters. Like her sister ship, power comes from her twin Westinghouse-branded A4W nuclear reactors, driving her 4 steam turbines on 4 shafts, producing 260,000 shaft horsepower.

The indicated maximum speed is 30 knots.

To complement her offensive armament, the George Washington was equipped with several defenses in case enemy planes managed to get past the screens of her fighter jets and naval support ships. These include 2 Sea Sparrow surface-to-air missile launchers, 2 RIM-166 RAM (Rolling Airframe Missile) launchers and 3 20mm Phalanx Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS). Electronic warfare is handled through the SLQ-25A(V)4 countermeasure system and torpedo countermeasure system.

Radar includes various systems such as AN/SPS-48E 3-D air search, AN/SPQ-9B target acquisition and two AN/SPN-46 air traffic control radars.

The aircraft carrier USS George Washington was first ordered in 1982 and launched in 1986. She was launched in 1990 and officially commissioned in 1992. Interestingly, her home port is at the Yokosuka Naval Base in Yokosuka, Japan, affectionately called "GW" by the USS George Washington. She is currently serving in the U.S.

Navy.

The USS George Washington is the only U.S. airline with a homeport outside the United States.
