History of USS Holland (SS-1)

This early compact attack submarine, born Holland VI/Holland (SS-1), essentially marked the official birth of the U.S. Navy submarine program into the 20th century. The ship is the first step in the modernization of the "new" U.S. Navy.

Holland was born out of an industry competition for a new, powerful underwater hull with sufficient underwater range and the ability to launch torpedoes. The Dutch design was developed as early as 1888 under the direction of Irish engineer John Phillip Holland, and after many redesigns, persuasion and use of his wealth to move the ship forward, Holland was finally commissioned for the United States. The Navy's first submarine.

Mr. Holland had the advantage of being able to entertain powerful Irish-American friends at the government level, which helped ensure his ship would see the light of day again. Otherwise, the U.S. submarine program could be wasted until the war motivates it. She was officially launched in May 1897 and officially entered service with the U.S. Navy about three years later.

The submarine was named after J.P. Holland.

Holland VI was laid in November 1896 and launched on 17 May 1897. On October 12, 1900 (historical and third "official" service) into the U.S. Navy inventory, the U.S.

Navy adopted the more formal designation "SS-1", the "Holland IV" designation was simplified to "Holland" - to the aircraft carrier USS Holland (SS-1).

Holland is an archetypal form that significantly imitates design lines that are still encountered today. The hull is teardrop-shaped, the bow is spherical and the stern is tapered. The propeller is in the stern and the rudder assembly is in the stern. There is no turret per se, just a low access hatch along the raised part of the upper hull. In addition, there is no diving aircraft mounted on the side of the vehicle.

Engines in the Netherlands include a 45-horsepower gasoline engine for land travel. For underwater operations, Holland relies on a 75 hp E.D. electric motor with a 66-cell Exide battery. The drive unit is used to drive a single screw in the stern. When built, she can reach a diving depth of 75 feet and a range of up to 40 nautical miles, sailing at 3 knots.

Maximum speed is 5 knots when submerged and 8 knots when surfaced.

The Holland had a surface displacement of 63 tons and 74 tons when submerged. Dimensions include a barrel length of 53 feet, a beam of 10 feet, and a draft of 11.5 feet. When armed, her armament was nominal, consisting of a 457 mm (18 in) torpedo tube and a pneumatic Zalinski ("dynamite gun") gun for close surface contact and self-defense.

The cannon was later removed.

Despite the impressive performance, the interior conditions in the Netherlands were very crowded for the six crew and most of the interior was exposed. The overall performance is perfect for her age, and her childish technique poses the same suffocation or explosion hazard to her crew as any other enemy warship.

At the time, there were few, if any, safety measures for underwater travel.

After her commissioning, Holland was mainly used as a training platform for potential American submariners and was extremely popular in the American media, which fueled her new development with national enthusiasm. In addition, their activities make it possible to study submarines carefully and collect their data for use in future U.S. submarine courses.

Her overall lifespan was limited as she never fought in combat and retired as early as July 17, 1905. Her name was removed from the Naval Register on November 21, 1910, and the ship was then sold on June 18, 1913, and exhibited for some time in Paterson, NJ.

Her hull was sold as scrap in 1932, ending her physical history, but her influence lingers.

Despite not being in combat during her service life, Holland still proved useful in her training efforts. She also influenced the design of other early submarines of the era - namely those of the Royal Navy (such as the HMS Holland 1) and Japan.
