History of the USS New York (ACR-2)

The USS New York (ACR-2/CA-2) was the second U.S. Navy armored cruiser so designated; the first was ill-fated The ill-fated Maine was quickly redesignated a second-rate warship. Due to the unusually long build in Maine, New York was actually the first armored cruiser commissioned by the U.S. Navy. A fourth Navy ship named in honor of New York State, she was later renamed Saratoga, then Rochester.

She had six 8-inch guns and was a heavily armed cruiser in service with the U.S. Navy.

She was laid on September 19, 1890 by William Cramp & Sons, Philadelphia, and introduced on December 2, 1891, by Helen Clifford Page, daughter of J. Seaver Page, the secretary of the New Union Union Club Miss Owned, Sponsored by York. New York came into service on 1 August 1893 under the command of Captain John Phillips.
