History of USS Langley (CVL-27)

SS Langley (CVL-27), originally named Fargo (CL-85), after the New York shipyard as Crown Point (CV-27). Laid Down Corp., Camden, NJ, April 11, 1942; renamed Langley, November 13, 1942; launched May 22, 1943; by Harry Hopkins, wife of Special Assistant to President Roosevelt Sponsored by Mrs.; CVL-27 reclassified on July 15, 1943; and enlisted under the command of Captain W. M. Dillon on August 31, 1943.

After sea trials in the Caribbean, USS Langley (CVL-27) left Philadelphia on December 6, 1943 for Pearl Harbor, where she participated in training operations. On 19 January, she sailed with Rear Admiral Mare Mitscher's Task Force 58 to attack the Marshall Islands.

From 29 January to 6 February, the airline's air groups conducted raids at Wotje and Taora in support of the Allied landings at Kwajalein, with a repeat performance at Eniwetok from 10 to 28 February.

USS Langley (CVL-27) left Majuro on June 7 for the Mariana Islands campaign. On June 11, Admiral Mitchell's carrier group took over the Army Air Force's land-based bombers. At 13:00, the task force launched airstrikes against enemy bases and airfields on Saipan and Tinian with 208 fighter jets and 8 torpedo bombers.

USS Langley (CVL-27) left Eniwetok on August 29 and was scheduled to conduct airstrikes against airfields in Peleliu and the Philippines with Task Force 38 under the command of Admiral William F. Halsey as September 20 Preparatory steps for Palau 15 invasion.

In January 1945, USS Langley (CVL-27) participated in a bold attack on the South China Sea in support of operations in Lingayen Bay. From December 30, 1944 to January 25, 1945, raids were carried out on the coasts of Taiwan, Indochina and China.

Entering this area, considered private by the enemy, brought a staggering number of Japanese ships, planes, supplies and installations destroyed.
