History
USS Providence (CL-82/CLG-6/CG-6) was a Cleveland-class light cruiser and the The fourth ship is named after the city of Providence, Rhode Island. Providence was in service from 1945 to 1949. From 1957 to 1959, she was converted into a guided missile cruiser and flagship. She held this position from 1959 to 1973.
After retiring, she was finally scrapped in 1980.
She was placed by Bethlehem Steel, Quincy, Massachusetts, July 27, 1943; launched December 28, 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Mary Roberts; and commissioned May 15, 1945. Providence left Boston on June 13, 1945, to complete the reorganization from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
After arriving in Newport, Rhode Island on Sept. 4, she trained future cruiser and carrier crews through Oct. 6.
