History of the PNS Ghazi

PNS/M Ghazi (S-130) (formerly USS Diablo (SS-479); reported name: Ghazi), SJ, was a Tench-class diesel-electric submarine, Pakistan Navy's first fast attack submarine. She was on loan from the U.S. Navy in 1963. : 68

She served in the US Navy from 1945 to 1963 and was loaned to Pakistan under the Security Assistance Program (SAP) for four years after the Ayyub administration successfully negotiated her procurement with the Kennedy administration. She joined the Pakistan Navy in 1964 and saw operations in the Indo-Pakistani theater during the 1965 war and later the 1971 war.

In 1968, due to the closure of the Suez Canal, Ghazi undertook an underwater circumnavigation of Africa and southern Europe, across the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic, refitted and updated in Golcuk, Turkey. The submarine can be equipped with up to 28 Mk.

As part of the overhaul, 14 torpedoes have been added and mine-laying capabilities have been increased.

Beginning as the only submarine in the Indo-Pakistani War in 1965, the Ghazi remained the flagship of the Pakistani Navy until she mysteriously sank off the east coast of India during a naval operation to the Bay of Bengal. While the Indian Navy blamed its destroyer INS Rajput for the sinking of the Ghazi, Pakistan's Military Monitoring and Verification Agency said "the submarine sank due to an internal explosion or the accidental detonation of a mine fired by the submarine near Visakhapatnam Port".

In 2010, the Indian Navy destroyed all records of its investigation into the matter. Many see this as an attempt to falsify history. Nonetheless, Indian historians consider the sinking of Ghazi a noteworthy event.

Because they describe the sinking as one of "the last great unsolved mysteries of the 1971 war".
