History of USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. (DD-850)

USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. (DD-850) is a former Killeen-class destroyer of the United States Navy. The ship was named for Navy pilot Lieutenant Joseph Kennedy Jr., son of former ambassador to Britain Joseph Kennedy Sr. and older brother of future President John F. Kennedy. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. served until 1973, taking breaks for modernization.

Highlights of her service include the blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Gemini 6 and Gemini 7 rescue teams. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. in Battleship as Museum Ship Cove, Fall River, Massachusetts.

Inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989, she is one of the few surviving Jilin-class destroyers.
