History
The Beretta Model 8000 emerged from the Italian arms manufacturer in 1994 and was marketed as a more convenient version of the full-size Beretta Model 92 series (the same pistol that became the US military pistol "M9"). One of the M92's downsides is its basic size, which largely prevents it from being used in a concealed-carry role -- popular with law enforcement and security.
Despite limited worldwide acceptance, various models and chambers have been introduced in the collection.
The M8000 is certainly a very different looking pistol than its larger counterparts - 7" in length with a 3.5" barrel. Weighing less than a pound, the internal action is recoiled by a locking breech assembly (double-action trigger).
Iron edges are attached to the rear and front of the slides in a typical fashion, and the serrations along the slides help hold the gun for racking purposes. The frame is made of lightweight aluminum alloy. The usual controls are present - slide lock, magazine release, safety, etc.
The amount of ammunition depends on the chamber used.
When the M8000 (15 rounds 9x19mm Parabellum magazine) started production, variants included the M8000F at . 41 AE, the more compact M8000L with a 13 round magazine, the M8000L P compact with a 15 round magazine, the M8357 in . 357 SIG, 11-round magazine, M8040 in . 40 S&W with 11-round magazine and M8045 in . 45 ACP 8-round magazine. 41 AE and 9x21mm.
The M8045 "Cougar" was a special model from 1998-2004. The Mini Cougar is its particularly compact form factor.
Beretta Model 8000 was adopted by elements in Italy as well as in Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Slovenia and the United States. The Los Angeles Police Department has received an inventory of the M8045F model with a 4-inch barrel from Beretta USA.
