History of the Denel M4 Commando
Modern infantry-grade mortars come in several major standardized caliber forms - 60mm, 81mm, and 120mm. While they function similarly in providing indirect fire support, they function slightly differently on the battlefield. A light weapon like the 60mm is designed to be highly portable, quick to deploy and easy to use, and this weapon can equip special forces such as paratroopers.
For the South African Army, this role is fulfilled by the M4 "Commando", a 60mm system that builds on the above characteristics and provides squads with indirect fire at close range against hardened enemies. military. Due to its ease of operation, it serves airborne troops and special forces.
The Commando series is manufactured by Denel Land Systems in South Africa.
The M4 can fire a variety of "flavors" of projectiles such as High Explosive (HE), Flare, Smoke and Practice rounds with a range of up to 2,100 meters. A lanyard-operated breech-based trigger replaces the traditional firing pin action common to most mortars and allows the soldier to carry the loaded weapon and be ready to fire. The Commando also doesn't have a bipod assembly, its base plate is placed on the ground and leveled by hand. Aiming devices and range tables help the operator character reach the target and trajectory of the projectile.
The launch tube is 650 mm long and has a muzzle velocity of 171 meters per second. The minimum attack range is 100 meters.

In addition to the South African Army, the Colombian Army is a well-known commando fighter. The M6 ??fills the more traditional 60mm mortar role, the M3 is the South African Army's 81mm version, and the M5 is the 120mm variant.
