Heckler & Koch HK 121 History

The HK 121 fills the product space for German gun manufacturer Heckler & Koch's General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG). It is a 7.62x51mm NATO chambered offshoot of the 5.56x45mm HK MG4 Squad automatic weapon.

At its heart is a proven gas-powered system, rated at 600 to 800 rounds per minute, fed by ammunition belts. Effective range up to 600 meters, double the maximum range - aiming via standard diopter assembly or iron sights. The gun weighs 10.8kg, is 1,165mm long, has a 550mm barrel and also shows very little recoil when fired.

The HK 121 has been adopted in small numbers by the German Army since 2005 and was designed to replace the MG3 GPMG series, which itself was a post-WWII (1939-1945) development of the MG42.

As a GPMG, the HK 121 follows accepted practice as a belt-fed, air-cooled, dual-purpose weapon. It can be fired from the shoulder with the help of a shoulder strap and foregrip, along the ground using a foldable bipod, from a tripod assembly, or from a vehicle as a suppression weapon. The design is dominated by a large rectangular case with an optional stock, while the pistol grip and trigger assembly are one piece. On top of the receiver is a rail that accommodates a variety of optics and night vision accessories to suit customer needs and mission requirements.

The barrel has the "quick change" design required for a good air-cooled machine gun, and the included carrying handle facilitates the change in a process that only takes a few seconds. The gas cylinder is located under the barrel as usual.

The vehicle version loses the full shoulder rest and gains a spade grip that interacts with the trigger assembly (retains the pistol grip). Infantry portability is enhanced through the use of vertical forward-grip shoulder straps or a folding bipod. A heavy-duty tripod gives the gun a very stable firing platform that reduces recoil to zero.

As a belt weapon, the HK 121 can use an exposed ammo belt, a 50-round cartridge, or a 120-round magazine as a decoy source. Robustness is key to the HK 121 product, and even if it is fully immersed in water and then fired, its function is not compromised - no action is affected.

The HK 121 is definitely in great demand as the MG3 is a proven winner and has been heavily adopted by many militaries around the world, while also being licensed by local factories in several countries.
