History

When the Brazilian army and government security forces needed a reliable semi-automatic pistol, they turned to the tried and true American Colt M1911A1 pistol. The M1911A1 has long proven itself around the world and has been copied by all parties (legally and illegally) around the world. Introduced in 1911, the original Colt version, the M1911, was designed for the . 45 ACP cartridge and saw combat operations in World War I. An improved form, the 1924 M1911A1, was used extensively in WWII, Korea and Vietnam (among other conflicts) and is still used today in far-flung places like Afghanistan and Iraq. Since its inception, more than 2 million of this species have existed in various forms. Due to its reliability in the field and inherently robust design, the Brazilians became another country to choose the legendary M1911A1 as their weapon of choice, eventually producing IMBEL's "Pistola 9 M973".

Local manufacturing of the M973 began in 1973.

IMBEL (Industria de Material BELico do Brasil) in Sao Paulo, Brazil was established in 1975 as a national organization, but its origins can be traced back to pre-war Brazil in 1934, and some of its early products were the manufacture of German Mausers rifle. Since then, the group has grown into a major arms developer and supplier to the Brazilian military, with its main products being the supply of small arms and ammunition. One of the company's modern production attempts was licensing the legendary American Colt M1911A1.

45 AKP form.

A major difference between the Brazilian Pistola 9 M973 and the original American M1911A1 design is the chamber of the common 9x19mm Parabellum cartridge for the former and the latter. 45 ACP rounds. The smaller cartridge allows 9 rounds to be stored in the vertical spring-loaded magazine, exceeding the 7-round capacity of the M1911A1.

Essentially, the M973 is nothing more than a 9mm copy of the M1911A1. The trigger is single-action in nature, and the operation of the gun is based on the short recoil principle. The overall dimensions of the pistol are 216 mm (8.5 inches) and the barrel length is 128 mm (just over 5 inches). The empty weight is reported as 1.01 kg. Externally, the IMBEL version is little different from a direct comparison to the M1911A1, with clean lines along the body, solid checkered-grip furniture, a solid trigger system in the slender loop and an exposed hammer on the back.

The rear of the pistol grip is forged with a pronounced trailing overhang for a firmer, more dominant grip. The safety mechanism is placed on the left side of the weapon, just above the grip, while the ejection port is usually placed in the top center of the receiver (just like the Colt).

The sights are iron with rear notches and front posts.

The M973 is known to be a solid semi-automatic pistol thanks to its Colt pedigree. IMBEL also produced another version of the M1911A1 from 1989, the "9GC-MD1", which contained a larger-capacity 17-round 9x19mm Parabellum magazine. The 45GC-MD1 has a similar sight, albeit an original one.

45 ACP cartridges and matching 13 cartridges, manufactured by computer-controlled machines, not humans. The 45UC-MD1 and 45UC-MD2 are further developments of the M973 system, both for the . 45 ACP cartridge, designed from the outset as a more compact form of the original M1911A1.

The main difference between the two is the shortened barrel of the MD1 and the perforated muzzle of the MD2 to reduce recoil.
