IWI Galil Marksman Assault Rifle Mark 1

History

In 1996, the original Galil IMI was modified to fulfill the role of the Designated Marksman Rifle (DMR) or class "Sniper" in the Israeli Army inventory, becoming the "Marksman's Assault Rifle Mark 1". With the Galil lineage, this new weapon also supports the standard 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge and its repeat-fire characteristics, although the rifle has been further improved for long-range combat. A unit's designated marksman/sniper is not a sniper per se as he/she lacks formal training in the arts, more like an infantryman trained for ranged combat.

Therefore, the DMR can be asked to engage targets outside the standard infantry range and repeatedly fire with accurate results. The MAR Mark 1 was developed to play this role in the Israel Defense Forces.

To date, other militaries around the world have included the expert in their doctrines including the Russians, Americans and British.

The MAR Mark 1 is a long-range weapon based primarily on medium to long-range accuracy, with a specially machined barrel made specifically for the character. Each is chromed and maximizes the full power of the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge, all set within the proven Galil frame (itself based on the Kalashnikov AK series via Finnish Valmet m/62). The MAR Mark 1 retains the original dual support folding stock (folded on the right side of the receiver) but has adjustable cheeks for comfort. The included bipod is adjustable and folds back against the front handle. The curved, detachable magazine holds 35 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition in a stacked spring-loaded arrangement.

The sight is mounted on the left side of the receiver, while the iron sight serves as a backup.

The internal functions of the MAR Mark 1 are exactly the same as the Galil Assault Rifle.
