SIG-Sauer SSG 2000

History

The SIG-Sauer SSG 2000 was introduced in 1983 as a long-range precision sniper rifle for military, law enforcement and sporting purposes. This is a bolt action design that requires the user to manually operate the bolt handle to clear the firing chamber of the spent cartridge and remove a new cartridge from the spring-loaded magazine. It's a traditional rifle through and through, but nonetheless, it has proven to be of excellent quality, in line with SIG firearms, and highly rated by those who end up using the type.

Additional stockpiles were purchased on the civilian market for target firing, and ammunition was supplied for several commercial ammunition types. SIG-Sauer no longer appears to be actively promoting this series of rifles, as the rifles may have been superseded by the more modern SSG 3000 series described elsewhere on this site and introduced in 1992.

The SSG 2000 has a circular receiver with an integrated front end, stock and pistol grip. The stock is fully adjustable and the trigger is placed in the usual way (using a "two-stage" design). The bolt shaft is located on the right side of the body. Iron sights are optional, and optics (usually Schmidt & Bender 1.5-6x42 or Zeiss 8x56 Diatal ZA8 series) can be mounted on mounts on the receiver night vision goggles, which are also supported). The barrel features a solid internal rifling design and measures 24 inches in length.

The entire weapon system is 47.5 inches long. The barrel is closed by a slotted flash suppressor/compensator. An adjustable bipod is optional and attached to the front. The weapon has a total unloaded weight of 6.6 kg.

While the SSG 2000 basically uses the widely accepted manual rotary bolt latch design, the operating system is a bit different from previous products. Rotation of the bolt handle is limited to 65 degrees, while the actual bolt body does not rotate, despite the user applying motion on the handle. The resulting operation results in a faster spinning bolt process, and cleaner casing extracts add more value to an already good instrument.
