History

. 44 Magnum, or more formally Smith & Wesson Model 29, became a legend in the Dirty Harry series starring Clint Eastwood. The gun was dubbed "the most powerful pistol in the world" by protagonist Dirty Harry and claimed to be able to "blow someone's head clean". Regardless of whether any claims are true or not, the Model 29 was known for its powerful shooting capabilities and was one of the most powerful pistols in the world at the time. Regardless, the movie propelled the Model 29 to stardom and a household name from the 1970s onwards.

In 1955, Smith & Wesson introduced the Model 29, designed to take advantage of the new .44 universal cartridge.

The Model 29 is a revolver, which means it fires chambered ammunition from a rotatably rifled (or unrecessed) cylinder embedded in the base. Operation of the weapon is conventional, with a trigger assembly with a pivot hammer and one-piece handle.

The Model 29 is available in 4", 5", 6.5", 8.4" and 10 5/8" barrel lengths, while other custom lengths are still available. The original pistol comes with 4" and 6.5" barrels. 8.4" barrel Introduced in 1957. The 4" barrel was eventually discontinued in 1993.

The 5" barrel version was manufactured in 1958 with 500 examples. The 10 5/8" length was later used in the Smith & Wesson Model 29 barrel series. Sights are adjustable as a 3-point tail assembly. The firing action is dual action, the operator simply pulls the trigger to fire instead of setting the hammer first.

Model 29 is designed to fire .44 magnums and .44 Special cartridge, the latter a holdover from the origins of the "44 Special" revolver for the Model 29. The Model 29 is often known for its obscene recoil effects.

. 44 Magnum (officially known as ".44 Remington Magnum") is noteworthy because the gun's original name came from the type of cartridge used. The cartridge is designed as a large bore, 0.429" diameter cartridge (despite the ".44" name).

That . The 44 has proven to be a successful short-range hunting cartridge with excellent stopping power.

Smith & Wesson introduced the Model 629 in 1978 to take advantage of the Model 29 series. The Type 629 is nothing more than a stainless steel derivative of the Type 29, although it has an interchangeable front sight, scope mount, through-ear barrel and combat grip. The 629 model was also further developed into the 629 "Classic" model. The Mountain Gun was a lighter Model 29 released in 1989, while the Trail Boss had a shorter barrel.

The 50th anniversary model 29 appeared in 2006, while the original model 29 was reissued in 2007 as part of Smith & Wesson's "Classic" collection. The Model 629 "Stealth Hunter" hunting revolver was introduced in 2008.

Smith & Wesson is headquartered in Springfield, Massachusetts.
