History of NORINCO QBZ-03 (Type 03)

Chinese defense contractor NORINCO (China North Industries Corporation) produces various military solutions for local national armed forces as well as overseas customers. Its extensive catalog includes armored vehicles, as well as small arms, and covers a full line of automatic weapons and service pistols.

The QBZ-03 automatic rifle is just one of many solutions developed by the company, this line was officially deployed to the Chinese Reserve in 2003 to reserve Border Patrol, Garrison and Reserve Forces, all of which belong to the People's Liberation Army Army Ground Force (PLAGF) integrated label.

This design - also known as the "Type 03" - is a traditional design throughout: traditionally arranged with an angled low-position pistol grip/trigger unit located behind the magazine well, a half-skeletal folding gun bracket, rectangular receiver, slotted front end and extension barrel assembly. Iron sights (flip-up rear diopter, fixed front) are located on the front and rear of the design. The muzzle is sealed with a slotted brake to aid recoil. As a pneumatic weapon (rotating the bolt), the cylinder used to power the movement of the internal piston is located above the barrel assembly. The weapon's charging handle is located on the right side of the frame, as is the ejection port.

Selective fire control allows the operator to choose between semi-automatic and fully automatic fire modes.

Newer versions of the rifle have a section of Picatinny rail above the receiver to accommodate various tactical optics, encouraging modularity of the rifle to suit the operator's taste.

Unlike previous Chinese-developed guns that were heavily influenced by Soviet designs, this rifle is based on the proprietary 5.8x42mm DBP-87 medium rifle cartridge that was in Chinese service in the 1980s and early 1990s - reportedly offering good penetration The value????is aimed at medium and long-range targets. Feeds from a curved Kalashnikov-style detachable 30-round magazine.

The export version is housed in the ubiquitous 5.56mm NATO medium rifle cartridge.

The rate of fire is specified at 750 rounds per minute, with an effective range of up to 500 meters. Unladen weight is 7.7 pounds, and the overall length is 37 inches when the shoulder rest is fully adjusted (28.5 inches otherwise).

The QBZ-03 is only used by Chinese second-line troops and Burmese armed forces personnel. It is also reported to be used by the South China Sword Special Forces of China.
