History of SOCIMI AR-831
Since their Type 821 submachine gun was based on the famous Israeli UZI 9mm, SOCIMI (Societa Costruzioni Industriali Milano) from Italy tried to sell another one based on the popular existing Design - AR-831, derived from AR-15/M16. Design work began in 1985, and the weapon retains some of the same features as the original - namely its 5.56x45mm NATO rifling, STANAG magazine feeder, integrated handle above receiver, fixed stock, and more.
Unlike the direct impact piston system of the AR-15/M16 series, it operates through a gas system. Essentially, the AR-731 is an M16 with the Soviet Kalashnikov AK-47 operating system.
Due to a lack of industry expertise to build this rifle from scratch, SOCIMI developed the AR-831, Type 821 submachine gun and AR-832 battle rifle with the help of Brescia-based Italian gun manufacturer Luigi Franchi. follow. SOCIMI was one of many other new companies that sprung up at the height of the Cold War, trying to capitalize on the popularity of NATO standard firearms.
