History of LGS Fennek (Light Armored Reconnaissance Vehicle)

Early development began in the early 1990s as a three-country project involving France, Germany and the Netherlands. Ultimately, the comparison between the Zobel prototype and the Panhard/MaK VBL leaned in favor of the former, and France withdrew from the project. However, the Zobel was modified with DAF/Wegmann and was very different from the final prototype that won the competition in 1994.

In particular, the driver's position is further back. Eventually, the design was refined between 1995 and 2000 to form the front compartment.

LGS (stands for "Leichter Panzerter Spahwagen" or "Light Armored Reconnaissance Vehicle" is a project of the German Army to replace older vehicles in service (like Luchs), while the Royal Netherlands Army has similar specifications therefore, according to the government With the blessing of the Netherlands Special Products Aerospace joined KMW (KraussMaffei Wegmann), which initially signed a joint production contract, and later the Turkish FNSS defense system stepped in to supply the weapons modules.

In April 2000, the KMW prototype was ready, and the tests were completed in December of the following year, when the joint Dutch-German order was made. 410 for the Dutch Army and 300 for the German Army. The first deliveries started in 2003 and were extended until 2015 for the German Armed Forces.

However, in 2004 SP Aerospace went bankrupt and was replaced by the newly formed Defence Vehicle Systems, which was tasked with realizing production for the Dutch Army.
