History

The People's Liberation Army (PLA) has significantly enhanced its air defense capabilities through the HQ-16 SAM launcher system, which has been in use since 2011. This system, developed in China, is believed to be inspired by the Russian "Buk" SAM system and is capable of engaging medium-range air targets, providing protection for ground forces and important installations. The HQ-16 missile is equipped with a solid rocket motor, a 155-pound warhead, and a radar homing function, enabling it to reach targets up to 25 miles away at altitudes of 60,000 feet while traveling at speeds exceeding Mach 3.

The HQ-16 system can be deployed on both land and sea, utilizing a 6x6 wheeled vehicle as the launch platform. This vehicle offers excellent maneuverability and is powered by a 517-horsepower engine, enabling it to cover up to 500 miles at speeds of 50 mph. The system comes in several versions, including shipboard, land-based, and upgraded variants, each with different operational ranges, and they are exported under various names.

In summary, the HQ-16 SAM launcher represents a significant modernization effort and capability expansion by the PLA. It offers advanced air defense and deterrence measures with versatile deployment options, making it a key component of China's military strategy and export offerings.
