History of CNS Bengbu (582) (Type 056)

China's military spending has increased by 11% over the 2011 budget. In 2012, China's military budget reached $100 billion for the first time, making it the world's second-highest defense spending after the United States. In 2012, the United States spent more than $600 billion on all aspects of its military, accounting for nearly 50 percent of the world's total military budget for war or defense materiel.

Many observers believe that China is engaged in an arms race with the United States, although it is difficult to agree with such an assessment based on the large budget gap between the two countries. Nonetheless, China's budget takes a long-term view of its military and naval intentions, with new figures expected to be released sometime in March 2013.

The Chinese see the South and East China Seas as their own waters and see the need to control the western and northern waters of the Pacific Ocean. The ocean not only borders most of the coast of China (geographically located to the east and south of mainland China), but also borders the island of Taiwan, the Philippines to the west, Sabah (Malaysia), Sarawak (Malaysia) and Brunei to the northwest, Singapore to the northeast, and to the east Adjacent to Vietnam, the East China Sea borders Japan. The northeastern part of the sea is also a deep basin, reaching a depth of 5,490 meters (18,000 feet), ideal for China's missile-laden submarine fleet. The waters contain the conflicting Paracel, Spratly and other islands between China and its neighbors areas that showcase rich fishing grounds and natural deposits of oil and gas in and around hundreds of islands in the East and South China Seas.

Contributing to this fight are the Pearl and Red Rivers in China, the Mekong in Vietnam and the Chao Phraya in Myanmar rivers that flow into the South China Sea and enable trade between these countries, making the ocean vital to the interests of many countries.

The concentration of population in the littoral countries of the South China Sea as well as other countries in the region is a necessary condition for their merchant ships to trade through these waters. The sea traffic through the seaway is equivalent to one third of all the merchant ships in the world.

In addition, the United States maintains its World War II-era military bases in Japan and a presence in Indonesia, Taiwan, and the Philippines, which the People's Liberation Army (PLAN) Navy considers to pose a regional military threat to sovereignty in China's home waters. To control the South China Sea and curb the presence of the U.S.

Navy and littoral navies, the PLA needs more powerful maritime forces, such as the Type 056 Jiangdao-class frigates. China's coastline stretches for kilometers, with many islands and reefs, and needs a frigate-like warship to help patrol China's "blue" and "brown" waters.

On February 26, 2013, the Chinese Navy received the first Jiangdao-class Type 056 frigate Bengbu in Shanghai to support its need to strengthen maritime defense and control the South and East China Seas. Bengbu (#582) became the lead ship of the Type 056 group, with a displacement of 1,400 tons and a fairly light displacement, comparable to the 1942 World War II era escort destroyers (and some of the 1969 production frigates that still exist for the Iranian Navy). commissioned in 2013). The classification of Chinese ships "frigates" is more relevant to their size, modern but limited armament, available sensor equipment, and support from a single naval helicopter.

The Type 056's hull design is particularly "stealthy," with the necessary sloping surfaces and a compact superstructure to reduce radar signatures. There is a full helipad at the stern, but she lacks the rigging common to such boats.

Bengbu is 313 ft 3 in (95.5 m) long and 38 ft 1 in (11.6 m) wide and draws only 14 ft 4 in (4.4 m) of water.

The boat can travel over 28 knots (51.8 km/h; 32.2 mph) and has fuel to propel it 2,000 knots (3,704 km) (approximately 18 knots (33.3 km/h)). 20. 7 mph)) to give her "blue water" range. Their primary weapon is the supersonic YJ-83 anti-ship cruise missile, which can be used against a variety of land- or sea-based targets. The YJ-83 has a range of more than 255 kilometers from the air and 150 to 200 kilometers from the ground.

The YJ-83 is equipped with four missiles in 2 dual-unit launchers. To counter the air defense threat, there is a single Flying Leopard 3000 Naval (FL-3000N) - a short-range, fire-and-forget compact missile system with eight missiles.

Each missile is 2 meters long and has a minimum range of 500 meters, a maximum range of 5.5 miles (9 kilometers) for subsonic targets and a maximum range of 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) for supersonic targets.

Bengbu carries a 1 x 76mm main gun mounted in front of the front building. The weapon is fueled by 152 ready-to-fire rounds with a choice of rates of fire of 30, 60 and 120 rounds per minute.

The 12.4 kg (27.3 lb) shell has an effective range of 10 km (6.2 mi) and a maximum range of 15.5 km (9.6 mi). The gun can be used against surface ships, coastal positions and even air targets - including low-altitude anti-ship missiles that require a multi-explosive bomb defense network.

The ship's anti-submarine weapon is the domestically produced Harbin Z-9EC helicopter, a Chinese military rotor platform built under license in France and designed by Eurocopter. She can be equipped with pulse compression radar, low frequency diving sonar, radar warning receiver (RWR) and equipped with anti-submarine warfare (ASW) torpedoes.

The Type 056 surface combatant as a whole is still under construction - three have been named and ten have been assigned flag numbers (as of 2013, Bengbu is the only active ship in the fleet). As more Type 056 ships come online, the Chinese navy's ability to pressure neighboring navies and track U.S. naval assets in the region will help China's ability to protect its claims in the busy East and South China Seas . The Chinese navy will only grow with such additions, which include a new ex-Soviet aircraft carrier currently (2013) being tested.
