History of CNS Haikou (171)

Haikou (171) is a modern guided missile destroyer of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), part of the Type 052C (Lanzhou-class) surface warships, mainly used for air defense of the fleet. The class was born in September 2001 through a government commitment, with the Haikou Hull eventually replacing the original Lanzhou (170) at Shanghai Jiangnan Shipyard. Haikou was officially launched on October 30, 2003 and officially commissioned in 2005. The hull is built with a modular design and can be shared with the similar family of 052B-class (Guangzhou-class) destroyers - their main differences are weapons and system accessories - for a more cost-effective procurement process.

So far (2013), 4 Type 052C destroyers have been completed, namely Lanzhou (170), Haikou (171), Changchun (150) and Zhengzhou (151), and as many as two (Jinan 152 and Xi'an 153) under construction.

Haikou has a displacement of 7,000 tons, a barrel length of 154 meters, a beam of 17 meters, and a draft of 6 meters. Power is provided by a CODOG unit - a "mix of diesel or petrol" - which allows bursts of speed beyond normal driving.

The propulsion system consists of 2 DA80/DN80 gas turbines (Ukrainian origin, UGT-25000) with a shaft horsepower of 48,600, plus 2 Shaanxi diesel engines (local copies of the German MTU Friedrichshafen design) with a horsepower of 8,840 developed to 57,400 horsepower and top speed (under ideal conditions) is 30 knots. Each ship in the class has a crew of 280, consisting of officers and soldiers.

From the outside, the design of the sea slogan is conventional, the first floor is unobstructed, the main superstructure is concentrated, and the stern secondary superstructure is lower. Like most modern destroyers/frigates in service or about to be in service, the Haikou uses an extremely clean side profile, which increases the ship's radar cross-section. The funnels are interconnected in a flat structure amidships, while the main deck guns and vertical launch system (VLS) of the forecastle are clearly identified directly aft of this location.

The bridge is located at the front spire of the main structure and is covered by an enclosed pyramid-shaped main mast, which contains the main sensors, radar, communications and fire control equipment.

As a missile carrier, the Haikou is armed with 48 HHQ-9 series long-range surface-to-air missiles (a variant of China's land-based missile development) mounted in an 8 x 6 cell vertical launch system. This will give the ship an extensive air defense network capable of protecting the core of China's maritime fleet.

Like most modern destroyers/frigates, the Haikou deploys anti-ship missiles via a pair of 8 x YJ-62 launchers (2 x 4-cell cylindrical launchers), while underwater threats are delivered by 6 x 533mm torpedo launchers response. For close-range threats and inshore bombing operations in support of amphibious assault, Haikou offers a 100mm DP (dual-purpose) deck automatic cannon based on the French Creusot-Loire T100C and 2 x 30mm Type 730 Close-In Weapon System (CIWS).) Automatic Cannons (one at the front, the other at the back).

Haikou is equipped with a Type 348 quad-array multi-function phased array radar (PAR). The ship will also receive a point defense kit that includes 4 x 18 tube-launched missile decoys.

Many of the onboard systems in Haikouhao and its class are of Chinese origin and therefore less reliant on foreign commodities. Fire control is handled by an MR 331 series FC radar system.

The stern section is reserved for an integrated flight deck capable of launching and accommodating medium-range helicopters, while the available hangar allows for on-site maintenance and repairs. The main helicopters used are the homegrown Harbin Z-9C (or similar) or the Soviet Russian all-weather anti-submarine/anti-ship naval Kamov Ka-28 "Spiral".

Airborne support for launching and recovering UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) is also increasing.

As of this writing (2013), Haikou remains active in the Chinese fleet??.
