History

The Turkish military manages a large and balanced naval force consisting of frigates, frigates and submarines. Currently (2018) there are at least 12 attack craft forming the underwater force, which are divided into three different classes: Atilay class, Preveze class and Gur class.

The Atilay class consists of four ships, including the TCG Batiray (S-349) - commissioned in 1978.

The Atilay class is the Turkish name for the Type 209 group, which was specially designed and developed in Germany for foreign export markets. The compact, economical, single-hulled design was designed to market the Navy the idea of ??a modern boat to help replace the aging and obsolete inventory of World War II-era submarines still in use in the early 1970s. The Type 209 has proven to be a welcome and safe investment, and the series has been in active service since 1971, with 61 of them up to standard. The operator has proven itself, as the vessel has been used by various navies around the world - from Argentina and Brazil to Peru and South Africa.

Turkey was the largest operator of the design, with all three grades passing the Type 209.

The TCG Batiray has a displacement of 1,285 tonnes (underwater) and has conventional diesel-electric propulsion. Dimensions include a length of 211 feet, a beam of 21 feet, and a draft of 20 feet. There were about thirty-three crew members on board. The propulsion scheme consists of supplying a diesel-electric unit of about 5,000 hp to a single shaft in the stern (4 x 120 batteries are also part of the power generation system).

Maximum underwater speed reaches nearly 12 knots, while underwater it reaches nearly 23 knots. Once surfaced and continuing at 10 knots, the range is a useful 11,000 nautical miles.

The vessel has enough material to stay at sea for 50 days, and the hull has been tested to a depth of 500 meters (1,600 feet).

The boat shape is traditional with a rounded nose cap and tapered ends. The sail is hoisted in the boat. Diving planes are set on both sides of the front hull. The stern is completed by a multi-blade propeller assembly and a cruciform stern assembly.

The Type 209's armament comes standard with 8 x 21 in (533 mm) forward torpedo tubes. Up to fourteen torpedo reloads can be carried. There is also optional support for launching UGM-84 Harpoon surface-to-surface anti-ship missiles, with built-in capability to carry and eject mines.

The Atilay-class submarines will be replaced by the new Type 214 submarines that entered service globally in 2007. The local Gorchuk Naval Shipyard will lay six ships for the Turkish Navy.
